Disseminated talaromycosis: Truly uncommon or uncommonly recognized?

34 years old male from north-east India, a known case of retroviral disease, presented with shortness of breath and significant weight loss and was found to have pancytopenia, skin lesions, organomegaly, generalized lymphadenopathy, cavitary lung disease with very low CD4 counts. He failed to improve on empirical antitubercular therapy and further evaluation revealed features of disseminated talaromycosis on bone marrow studies. We hereby present an interesting case of a systemic fungal disease in the setting of advanced HIV infection.

Capillary-driven self-assembly of soft ellipsoidal microgels at the air-water interface.

The adsorption of ellipsoidal colloidal particles on liquid interfaces induces interfacial deformation, resulting in anisotropic interface-mediated interactions and the formation of superstructures. Soft prolate-shaped microgels at the air-water interface offer an ideal model for studying spontaneous capillary-driven self-assembly due to their tunable aspect ratio, controlled functionality, and softness. These microgels consist of a polystyrene core surrounded by a cross-linked, fluorescently labeled poly([Formula: see text]-isopropylmethylacrylamide) shell.

Interfacial Assembly of Peptide Carbon Dot Hybrids Enables Photoinduced Electron Transfer with Improved Photoresponse.

Assemblies at the interface represent a powerful tool for integrating organic and inorganic components into hybrid nanostructures. Carbon dots are both excellent electron donors and acceptors, offering opportunities for their potential uses in light-harvesting applications. To further improve their functions, integration of acceptor carbon dots into donor organic nanostructures is of great interest for improving photophysical properties useful for photoinduced electron transfer.

Proper duration of antibiotics after video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for the treatment of thoracic empyema.

Background: When chest tube drainage does not adequately resolve thoracic empyema, video assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is often needed. However, the proper duration of antibiotics after VATS is poorly defined. Consequently, the objective of this study was to evaluate if short antibiotic durations post-VATS was equally effective compared to longer durations.

The humanistic burden of immunoglobulin A nephropathy on patients and care-partners in the United States.

Purpose: This cross-sectional survey study quantified the humanistic burden of immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN), in terms of physical and mental health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and work productivity, among adults with primary IgAN and their care-partners.

Methods: HRQoL was assessed (01/31/22 - 05/31/23) with validated tools including the KDQoL-36 (with SF-12), GAD-7 (anxiety), PHQ-9 (depression), and WPAI: SHP (work productivity). Participant characteristics and total/domain scores were summarized; selected outcomes were compared to an external, kidney disease-free cohort.
