Rubisco, the most prevalent protein on Earth, catalysers both a reaction that initiates C carbon fixation, and a reaction that initiates photorespiration, which stimulates protein synthesis. Regulation of the balance between these reactions under atmospheric CO fluctuations remains poorly understood. We have hypothesised that vascular plants maintain organic carbon-to-nitrogen homoeostasis by adjusting the relative activities of magnesium and manganese in chloroplasts to balance carbon fixation and nitrate assimilation rates.

The behavior of many plant enzymes depends on the metals and other ligands to which they are bound. A previous study demonstrated that tobacco Rubisco binds almost equally to magnesium and manganese and rapidly exchanges one metal for the other. The present study characterizes the kinetics of Rubisco and the plastidial malic enzyme when bound to either metal.

Introduction: Understanding of the needs of people with stroke at hospital discharge and in the first six-months is limited. This study aim was to profile and document the needs of people with stroke at hospital discharge to home and thereafter.

Methods: A prospective cohort study recruiting individuals with stroke, from three hospitals, who transitioned home, either directly, through rehabilitation, or with early supported discharge teams.

Mechanical vibrations can be effectively converted into electrical energy using a liquid type of energy harvesting device comprised of a ferrofluid and a permanent magnet-inductor coil assembly. Compared to solid vibration energy harvesting devices, the liquid nature of the ferrofluid overcomes space conformity limitations which allow for the utilization of a wider range of previously inaccessible mechanical vibration energy sources for electricity generation and sensing. This report describes the design and the governing equations for the proposed liquid vibration energy harvesting device and demonstrates vibration energy harvesting at frequencies of up to 33 Hz while generating up to 1.

Background Atrial fibrillation is a major risk factor for ischaemic stroke. We investigated whether active screening for atrial fibrillation in secondary care, followed by careful evaluation of risk factors and communication to general practitioners from stroke specialists, could increase appropriate anticoagulation prescription. Methods Between 1/9/14 and 28/2/15 all acute medical admissions were screened for atrial fibrillation at Cambridge University Hospital.
