Short-term outcomes of South African children with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children: a prospective cohort study.

Background: Despite the life-threatening presentation of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), the overall prognosis is favourable in centres with access to appropriate supportive care. In this study, we investigate the short-term outcomes in children with MIS-C in Cape Town, South Africa.

Methods: This prospective observational cohort study included children <13 years who fulfilled the WHO case definition of MIS-C and were admitted to Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa between 1 June 2020 and 31 October 2021.

An Elderly Man With Progressive Dyspnea on Exertion and Atrial Fibrillation as Manifestations of Senile Cardiac Amyloidosis.

Senile cardiac amyloidosis is a form of amyloidosis seen more commonly in the elderly population. It was previously believed to have no functional significance, but more recent studies suggest that it is an important cause for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in the elderly. The diagnosis may be challenging and it is important to have a high suspicion for this disease in the proper clinical setting.

Carbamazepine-induced systemic lupus erythematosus presenting as cardiac tamponade.

Here we report the case of a patient who presented with acute cardiac tamponade due to drug-induced systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The patient had been treated for a seizure disorder with carbamazepine, a drug that has previously been demonstrated to cause SLE-like syndromes. Further serologic analysis demonstrated the likelihood of drug-induced SLE in this patient, with the rare presentation of cardiac tamponade.

Cardiac manifestations of HIV/AIDS: a review of disease spectrum and clinical management.

HIV and AIDS involve multiple organ systems. Lungs, brain, skin, gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, and heart are the major organs targeted by the direct effects of HIV infection and the secondary opportunistic complications of AIDS. Although most other organ system involvement has been extensively described in numerous studies and reviews, cardiac abnormalities related to HIV infection have remained less well characterized, partially because their pathogenesis was less clear and their clinical significance was uncertain.
