Poisoning of workers working in small lead-based units.

Background: No data are available with the labor departments among the workers of small-scale lead-based units with regard to lead poisoning. One hundred and ninety-five workers were investigated for lead exposure and three were found exceeding the limit of 80 mg/dL, which required a treatment for lead poisoning.

Aim: To assess the exposure and health risk in workers working in small lead-based units.

Ceruloplasmin as a marker of occupational copper exposure.

Estimation of serum copper to indicate copper status in the human system in the context of moderate chronic occupational copper exposure requires a sophisticated and expensive method. Hence, a search for a suitable marker has been made and few studies have found potential in serum ceruloplasmin. In this context, the present study was initiated to explore whether ceruloplasmin could serve as a predictor of occupational copper exposure.

Seminal plasma zinc concentration and alpha-glucosidase activity with respect to semen quality.

This study was conducted to examine the relationship between the concentration of zinc and neutral alpha-glucosidase (NAG) with semen quality. Semen samples from 75 male partners of couples who were attending the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department were analyzed for semen quality. Based on sperm count, the subjects were divided into three groups.

Development of indigenous local exhaust ventilation system: reduction of welders exposure to welding fumes.

Two (portable and mobile) local exhaust ventilation (LEV) units were developed in collaboration with the Rural Technology Institute, Gandhinagar, India. Basically, each unit consists of three parts comprising an electric motor, a blower and a fume hood. In both units the motor is fixed in a rectangular iron frame in a foot-mount position and equipped compactly with a blower, which in turn is connected to a fume hood through a flexible hosepipe.
