Triple negative breast cancers (TNBC) are characterized by a poor prognosis and a lack of targeted treatments. Their progression depends on tumor cell intrinsic factors, the tumor microenvironment and host characteristics. Although adipocytes, the primary stromal cells of the breast, have been determined to be plastic in physiology and cancer, the tumor-derived molecular mediators of tumor-adipocyte crosstalk have not been identified yet.

Article Synopsis
  • Osteosarcoma (OS) is a rare childhood cancer with varied responses to treatment, influenced by genetic differences among patients, but current studies have produced inconsistent results and limited gene focus.
  • This research involved an exome-wide association study on 24 OS patients to find genetic variations linked to adverse effects from standard chemotherapy drugs like methotrexate, cisplatin, and doxorubicin.
  • Significant gene sets connected to side effects like neutropenia and liver toxicity were identified, highlighting the need for more comprehensive studies to explore genetic influences on drug responses in OS patients.

Breast cancer progression is highly dependent on the heterotypic interaction between tumor cells and stromal cells of the tumor microenvironment. Cancer-associated adipocytes (CAAs) are emerging as breast cancer cell partners favoring proliferation, invasion, and metastasis. This article discussed the intersection between extracellular signals and the transcriptional cascade that regulates adipocyte differentiation in order to appreciate the molecular pathways that have been described to drive adipocyte dedifferentiation.

Germline variants in genes involved in SARS-CoV-2 cell entry and in host innate immune responses to viruses may influence the susceptibility to infection. This study used whole-genome analyses of lung tissue to identify polymorphisms acting as expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs) for 60 genes of relevance to SARS-CoV-2 infection susceptibility. The expression of genes with confirmed or possible roles in viral entry-replication and in host antiviral responses was studied in the non-diseased lung tissue of 408 lung adenocarcinoma patients.

Since osseointegration depends on bone metabolism, low levels of vitamin D in the blood may negatively affect bone formation around dental implants. To date, only a few studies have investigated the possible connection between serum levels of vitamin D and early dental implant failure (EDIF), i.e.
