Article Synopsis
  • Overshooting from convective regions into stable zones is important for mixing chemical species and transporting angular momentum and magnetic fields in stars.
  • The study uses 3D simulations to explore how factors like density stratification and rotation affect overshooting dynamics, revealing that the relationship is complex and not simply linear.
  • Results indicate that the behavior of mean flows due to rotation extends into stable regions, potentially enhancing our understanding of stellar structure, particularly in relation to phenomena like the solar tachocline.

The observational absence of giant convection cells near the Sun's outer surface is a long-standing conundrum for solar modelers. We herein propose an explanation. Rotation strongly influences the internal dynamics, leading to suppressed convective velocities, enhanced thermal-transport efficiency, and (most significantly) relatively smaller dominant length scales.

Branching morphogenesis underlies organogenesis in vertebrates and invertebrates, yet is incompletely understood. Here, we show that the sarco-endoplasmic reticulum Ca reuptake pump (SERCA) directs budding across germ layers and species. Clonal knockdown demonstrated a cell-autonomous role for SERCA in air sac budding.
