Development of infant botulism in a 3-year-old female with neuroblastoma following autologous bone marrow transplantation: potential use of human botulism immune globulin.

Infant botulism is a rare disease caused by the release of toxin produced in the intestinal tract by Clostridium botulinum. The disease primarily affects infants under 1 year of age. We report a 3-year-old child with stage IV neuroblastoma who developed symptoms of progressive motor weakness, bulbar palsy and respiratory failure 42 days after autologous BMT.

Spontaneous and stimulated growth hormone release in adolescents with type I diabetes mellitus: effects of metabolic control.

Abnormalities in GH release have been found in adults with poorly controlled type I diabetes mellitus. During puberty, circulating GH concentrations transiently increase. To investigate in pubertal diabetic adolescents, the physiological relationship between metabolic control and GH release, we compared spontaneous and GH-releasing hormone (GHRH)-stimulated GH release in six pubertal subjects during poor (study A) and improved (study B) metabolic control.

Effect of low and high intensity exercise on circulating growth hormone in men.

We hypothesized that circulating GH would increase only if a threshold of work intensity [corresponding to the anaerobic or lactate threshold (LT)] was exceeded. Ten healthy male volunteers (18-35 yr) first performed ramp-type progressive cycle-ergometer exercise to determine the LT and the maximal oxygen uptake. On subsequent mornings after an overnight fast, each subject performed bouts of 1, 5, and 10 min constant work rate exercise of either high intensity (above LT) or low intensity (below LT).
