Incidence of venous thromboembolism in patients with sickle cell disease undergoing noncardiovascular surgery.

Objective: Patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) will have a baseline hypercoagulable state and an increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Few data are available regarding the efficacy of standard prophylaxis in preventing VTE after noncardiovascular surgery for patients with SCD. Our objective was to investigate the incidence of VTE in patients with SCD who had undergone noncardiovascular surgery.

Threshold Concepts in Preclinical Medical Education: Students' Perceptions.

Threshold concepts are those ideas that learners often find difficult, but must understand in order to master a discipline. Nearly all research into threshold concepts has been from the perspective of teachers. We argue that the students' perspectives can also be helpful.

Human papillomavirus type 16-specific T cell responses and their association with recurrence of cervical disease following treatment.

Human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV-16) L1- and E7-specific T cell responses were measured in 58 women with abnormal cervical cytology in a prospective study. On recruitment, patients responded most frequently and with the highest numbers of responding cells to the L1 region aa 311-345 and this response was significantly associated with the presence of cervical disease (P=0.041).

Lymph node cytology in Wegener's granulomatosis.

We report on cytological findings on aspirates from the cervical lymph node from a case of Wegener's granulomatosis (WG). The diagnostic utility of technique in diagnosing a sizable minority of WG patients who present with cervical lymphadenopathy is discussed. We outline an approach to diagnosis of necrotising granulomatous lesions in aspirates from lymph nodes in a tabular form.
