Racism is an ethical issue for healthcare artificial intelligence.

There is growing attention and evidence that healthcare AI is vulnerable to racial bias. Despite the renewed attention to racism in the United States, racism is often disconnected from the literature on ethical AI. Addressing racism as an ethical issue will facilitate the development of trustworthy and responsible healthcare AI.

Modeling health and well-being measures using ZIP code spatial neighborhood patterns.

Individual-level assessment of health and well-being permits analysis of community well-being and health risk evaluations across several dimensions of health. It also enables comparison and rankings of reported health and well-being for large geographical areas such as states, metropolitan areas, and counties. However, there is large variation in reported well-being within such large spatial units underscoring the importance of analyzing well-being at more granular levels, such as ZIP codes.

Catalytic Cleavage of the 9-Fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl (Fmoc) Protecting Group under Neat Conditions.

This work reports the first solvent-free catalytic approach for the cleavage of the fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl (Fmoc) protecting group from amine and alcohol functionalities. Various saccharide, peptide, and glyco-amino acid substrates were efficiently deprotected by simple treatment with 20 mol % neat 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) (one of the effective base catalysts found), without any solvent or stoichiometric additives. Small model structures were finally assembled through one-pot, base-catalyzed, solvent-free multistep sequences combining the Fmoc cleavage with esterification, amidation, and/or glycosylation steps.
