Article Synopsis
  • Wilt disease, caused by the fungus Fusarium oxysporum, poses a serious threat to global tomato production, and researchers are exploring two Bacillus strains (PKDN31 and PKDL10) for biocontrol.
  • The spent supernatant from these strains demonstrated strong antifungal activity against Fusarium, with inhibition percentages of 95.33% for PKDN31 and 96.54% for PKDL10, alongside the production of lytic enzymes and other beneficial compounds.
  • Inoculating tomato seeds with these Bacillus strains showed increased systemic resistance and improved growth against Fusarium, suggesting their potential as effective biocontrol agents in agriculture.

Indiscriminate usage, disposal and recalcitrance of petroleum-based plastics have led to its accumulation leaving a negative impact on the environment. Bioplastics, particularly microbial bioplastics serve as an ecologically sustainable solution to nullify the negative impacts of plastics. Microbial production of biopolymers like Polyhydroxyalkanoates, Polyhydroxybutyrates and Polylactic acid using renewable feedstocks as well as industrial wastes have gained momentum in the recent years.
