Pneumococcal pneumonia in hospitalized patients. Clinical and radiological presentations.

The clinical and radiological features of pneumococcal pneumonia were studied in 94 hospitalized patients. Fifty-seven (61%) had a bronchopneumonic pattern on roentgenogram, and 37 (39%), a lobar pattern. Eighty-two (87%) of the patients in both roentgenographic classifications had one or more underlying disease states.

Clinical and roentgenographic features of nosocomial pulmonary disease due to Mycobacterium xenopi.

We describe 19 cases of pulmonary disease due to Mycobacterium xenopi, a nosocomial infection related to the hospital water system. Pre-existing lung disease and prolonged environmental exposure during previous hospitalizations were apparent predisposing factors. Twelve patients had respiratory symptoms, including three with hemoptysis, at the time an abnormal chest roentgenogram was obtained.

Peri-emphysematous lung infection.

The difficulty in classifying pulmonary infection within areas of bullous emphysema may have contributed to the lack of appreciation of this entity. This process is important to recognize because: (1) the clinical picture is usually benign:; (2) it may be confused with tuberculosis, fungal disease, and carcinoma of the lung; and (3) radiographic resolution may be slow. For these reasons, pneumonitis which occurs within emphysematous lung may have been previously considered as slowly resolving pneumonias.
