Profiling medical school learning environments in Malaysia: a validation study of the Johns Hopkins Learning Environment Scale.

Purpose: While a strong learning environment is critical to medical student education, the assessment of medical school learning environments has confounded researchers. Our goal was to assess the validity and utility of the Johns Hopkins Learning Environment Scale (JHLES) for preclinical students at three Malaysian medical schools with distinct educational and institutional models. Two schools were new international partnerships, and the third was school leaver program established without international partnership.

Ubiquitous variability in the prevalence of Trichobilharzia stagnicolae (Schistosomatidae) infecting Stagnicola emarginata in three northern Michigan lakes.

During 4 consecutive collecting seasons from 1998 through 2001, 77,326 common beach snails (Stagnicola emarginata, Lymnaeidae) were examined for infections by Trichobilharzia stagnicolae from multiple sites on Walloon Lake, Higgins Lake, and Lake Leelanau, located in the northern region of the lower peninsula of Michigan. Snails were examined for infections using the light-box technique (exposure to bright fluorescent light). The prevalence of infected snails varied significantly among lakes within a year, between years in a lake, at a site from year to year, and at a site over a collecting season.

A standardized protocol for the treatment of severe pneumonia in kidney transplant recipients.

Although the incidence of pneumonia after kidney transplantation is the lowest among all solid organ transplants, it is associated with high mortality rate (40-50%). We evaluated the efficacy of a protocol consisting of bronco-alveolar-lavage (BAL) for early microbiological diagnosis, reduction of the immunosuppressive therapy, and prompt administration of standardized antibiotic regimen in renal transplant recipients with severe pneumonia. Between 6/1989 and 5/1999, 40 kidney transplant recipients developed 46 episodes of severe pneumonia (hypoxia and/or infiltrate on the chest X-ray).

Reliability of estimates of return of lost letters as a measure of public attitudes to taking human life.

An analysis of letters distributed in cities and smaller rural communities in north and south Florida (ns=400 and 448) showed return rates among several addressees were slightly but significantly correlated (rs=.10 and .10) so very small interpoll agreement is present.
