Purpose: Patients with vestibular schwannoma undergoing definitive radiotherapy commonly experience hearing loss due to tumor and treatment effects; however, there is limited data evaluating concurrent medication use and other clinicopathologic factors associated with hearing preservation during and after radiotherapy. We performed a retrospective cohort study reviewing consecutive patients from 2004 to 2019 treated with radiotherapy for vestibular schwannoma at our institution.

Methods: Ninety four patients with concurrent medications, baseline audiograms, and post-radiotherapy audiograms available were evaluable.

Measuring the mechanical properties of soft tissues is important in biomechanics and for diagnosis and staging of diseases, but challenging because it is difficult to control the boundary conditions. We present a novel, non-invasive method for measuring tissue properties using gravitational loading. MRI images of an organ in different positions are registered to measure tissue displacements due to gravitational forces in different positions.

Background: Subsequent malignant neoplasms (SMN; new cancers that arise after an original diagnosis) contribute to premature mortality among adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors. Because of the high population prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, we identify demographic and clinical risk factors for HPV-associated SMNs (HPV-SMN) among AYA cancer survivors in the SEER-9 registries diagnosed from 1976 to 2015.

Methods: Outcomes included any HPV-SMN, oropharyngeal-SMN, and cervical-SMN.

Synthetic models (phantoms) of the brain-skull system are useful tools for the study of surgical events that are otherwise difficult to study directly in humans. To date, very few studies can be found which replicate the full anatomical brain-skull system. Such models are required to study the more global mechanical events that can occur in neurosurgery, such as positional brain shift.

Computational modelling of the brain requires accurate representation of the tissues concerned. Mechanical testing has numerous challenges, in particular for low strain rates, like neurosurgery, where redistribution of fluid is biomechanically important.
