Wildfire ashes: evaluating threats on the Pantanal wetland reserve (Mato Grosso, Brazil) using ecotoxicological tests.

In 2020, the largest continuous wetland area on the planet, the Brazilian Pantanal, experienced an unprecedented fire that affected the entire ecosystem. Our goal was to elucidate the effects of ash presence following the fire events. We quantified the impact of ashes, collected in four Conservation Units, on soil, water, and atmosphere.

A human skin-on-a-chip platform for microneedling-driven skin cancer treatment.

Skin-on-a-chip models provide physiologically relevant platforms for studying diseases and drug evaluation, replicating the native skin structures and functions more accurately than traditional 2D or simple 3D cultures. However, challenges remain in creating models suitable for microneedling applications and monitoring, as well as developing skin cancer models for analysis and targeted therapy. Here, we developed a human skin/skin cancer-on-a-chip platform within a microfluidic device using bioprinting/bioengineering techniques.

Cardiac Biomarkers in a Brazilian Indigenous Population Exposed to Arboviruses: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Arthropod-borne viral diseases are acute febrile illnesses, sometimes with chronic effects, that can be debilitating and even fatal worldwide, affecting particularly vulnerable populations. Indigenous communities face not only the burden of these acute febrile illnesses, but also the cardiovascular complications that are worsened by urbanization. A cross-sectional study was conducted in an Indigenous population in the Northeast Region of Brazil to explore the association between arboviral infections (dengue, chikungunya, and Zika) and cardiac biomarkers, including cardiotrophin 1, growth differentiation factor 15, lactate dehydrogenase B, fatty-acid-binding protein 3, myoglobin, N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide, cardiac troponin I, big endothelin 1, and creatine kinase-MB, along with clinical and anthropometric factors.

Botulinum Toxin's Effects on Muscle Tone and Joint Mobility in Children with Congenital Zika Syndrome - A Case Series.

 To evaluate the effects of the botulinum toxin (BTX-A) on muscle tone and joint mobility in children with congenital Zika syndrome (CZS).  This was a longitudinal case series carried out in a Support Center for Children with Microcephaly, located in Northeastern Brazil. We collected data from the institution's medical records, containing information about muscle tone and passive joint mobility measured at least 3 months before and 4 weeks after BTX-A application.

Novelties on tradescantia: Perspectives on water quality monitoring.

In the face of intense urban expansion, the assessment of water quality plays a crucial role in environmental preservation. Here, we evaluated aquatic genotoxicity in three locations with different degrees of urbanization using Tradescantia pallida var. purpurea and Daphnia magna as bioindicators.
