Factors associated with serum ferritin levels and iron excess: results from the EPIC-EurGast study.

Purpose: Excess iron is involved in the development of non-communicable diseases such as cancer, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular conditions. We aimed to describe the prevalence of excess iron and its determinants in healthy European adults.

Methods: Sociodemographic, lifestyle, iron status, dietary information, and HFE genotyping were obtained from controls from the nested case-control study EPIC-EurGast study.

The combination of aortic regurgitation, rheumatoid aortitis, and subaortic stenosis is rare in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Moreover, the surgical treatment of these entities can be challenging and with non-adequate results. We report a case of a patient with severe aortic regurgitation, inaccessible aortic root secondary to rheumatoid aortitis, and severe subaortic stenosis initially treated by aortic valve replacement.

Electrical resistivity methods to characterize the moisture content in Brazilian sanitary landfill.

The moisture content of the municipal solid waste (MSW) is a physical characteristic that plays a fundamental role in the stability and settlement of landfills. However, this physical index is difficult to monitor within the mass of landfilled MSW because it undergoes great variation due, mainly, to the heterogeneity and biodegradation of the waste. Brazilian MSW generally has a large amount of organic matter, that when biodegraded, generates a considerable volume of gases and fluids, aggravated by climatic conditions, such as high rainfall and temperatures.

Groundwater governance: The illegality of exploitation and ways to minimize the problem.

In Brazil, there are about 2.5 million tubular wells in which 88% of them are illegal, extracting more than 17,580 Mm3/yr. This irregular use may cause sustainability issues that may be economic, social, or environmental (overexploitation, well losses and associated increases of water conflicts; aquifer contamination; and land subsidence).

Receptors involved in dexketoprofen analgesia in murine visceral pain.

Various animal models, especially rodents, are used to study pain, due to the difficulty of studying it in humans. Many drugs that produce analgesia have been studied and there is evidence among which NSAIDs deserve to be highlighted. Dexketoprofen (DEX) provides a broad antinociceptive profile in different types of pain; therefore, this study was designed to evaluate the profile of antinociceptive potency in mice.
