Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of two different sources of polyunsaturated fatty acid-fish oil (FO) and argan oil (AO)-on some risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as platelet aggregation, dyslipidemia, and oxidative stress.

Methods: To explore this, four groups of six male rats were fed with different diets: The first group received a standard diet (control); the second group received a high-fat diet; the third was fed with a high-fat diet supplemented with 5% FO, and the last group received a high-fat diet supplemented with 5% AO.

Results: After 8 wk of the diet, AO showed a decrease in plasma lipids similar to that of FO.

This study used the rat pancreatic AR 4-2 J cell line as a model system to investigate the role of glycosylation in bile salt-dependent lipase (BSDL) secretion and esterolytic activity. Results indicated that AR 4-2 J cells synthesized BSDL, the esterolytic activity of which was the greater part of the cell activity toward 4-nitrophenylcaproate. The protein thus expressed was glycosylated and had a molecular mass approximately 74 kDa.

Glycoproteins of human pancreatic juice were characterized by means of lectins after electrophoresis and electrotransfer to nitrocellulose membranes. For the detected glycoproteins, only a 100-kDa glycoprotein varied in the pancreatic juice from a normal patient (i.e.

This study describes the structure of the N-linked oligosaccharide chains of bile-salt-dependent lipase isolated from the pancreatic juice of a normal donor. After hydrazinolysis, neutral sugar chains were separated from acidic chains by paper electrophoresis and were fractionated using serial column chromatography with immobilized lectins and Bio-Gel P-4 filtration. Structural analysis was performed by means of sequential glycosidase digestion and revealed that the neutral sugar chains are mainly of the biantennary complex type.

The diagnostic value of bile salt-dependent lipase for pancreatic diseases was tested in sera of 187 patients. Of these patients, 76 suffered from pancreatic carcinoma, 43 from nonmalignant liver diseases (cirrhosis and chronic hepatitis), 18 from acute pancreatitis, and 20 from chronic pancreatitis. The remaining subjects were controls without pancreatic pathology.
