Currently, the search for new alternatives to conventional antibiotics to combat bacterial resistance is an urgent task, as many microorganisms threaten human health due to increasing bacterial resistance to traditional medicines. Thus, new molecules such as antimicrobial peptides have emerged as promising alternatives because of their low induction of resistance and broad spectrum of action. A pioneering study regarding the isolation, biochemical evaluation, functional assays and first PEGylation report of a novel vascular endothelial growth factor from venom (VEGF and PEG-VEGF). VEGF was isolated from crude venom using two different chromatographic steps, representing 2% of soluble venom proteins. Its primary sequence was determined using mass spectrometry analysis, and the molecule demonstrated no affinity to heparin.

Snakebite envenoming represents a major health problem in tropical and subtropical countries. Considering the elevated number of accidents and high morbidity and mortality rates, the World Health Organization reclassified this disease to category A of neglected diseases. In Latin America, genus snakes are mainly responsible for snakebites in humans, whose pathophysiology is characterized by local and systemic inflammatory and degradative processes, triggering prothrombotic and hemorrhagic events, which lead to various complications, organ damage, tissue loss, amputations, and death.
