First Measurement of Transverse-Spin-Dependent Azimuthal Asymmetries in the Drell-Yan Process.

The first measurement of transverse-spin-dependent azimuthal asymmetries in the pion-induced Drell-Yan (DY) process is reported. We use the CERN SPS 190  GeV/c π^{-} beam and a transversely polarized ammonia target. Three azimuthal asymmetries giving access to different transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions (PDFs) are extracted using dimuon events with invariant mass between 4.

Electromechanical analysis of a symmetric piezoelectric/elastic laminate structure: theory and experiment.

The dynamic characteristics of a piezoelectric laminate cantilever structure treated as an actuator are analyzed by electroelasticity. General formulation of calculations for displacement sensitivity, electric current, electromechanical coupling coefficients, and results from parametric analyses are presented for axial expansion/contraction, transverse bending, and expansion/contraction-bending coupled motion. The frequency response of displacement and electrical current and the displacement sensitivity were experimentally measured.

Coronary endarterectomy during off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery.

Coronary endarterectomy (CEA) is often combined with coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), which is performed on cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Recent advances in off-pump surgical technique and cardioanesthesiology, along with the increasing number of patients with high risk of CPB complications made it possible and desirable to execute CEA on a beating heart. Russian scientific literature lacks reports on these interventions.

Species, population and age diversity in cell resistance to adhesion of Neisseria meningitidis serogroups A, B and C.

The variation of cell adherence of meningococci serogroups A, B and C and influenza viruses was investigated in 11 animal species and in humans of different age groups (1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th weeks; 2nd-3rd months; 4th-12th months, 2nd-3rd years; and 18th-60th years of life) as well as in women during pregnancy (17th-36th weeks) and childbirth. Red blood cells of all animals tested as well as of human newborns were absolutely resistant to attachment of meningococci. In neonatal and the later periods the human cells become far differently sensitive individually to meningococcal adhesion.

Comparative analysis of the molecular heterogeneity of ceruloplasmin from human blood and breast milk.

The content of ceruloplasmin (Cp) was determined in 96 samples of human breast milk using rocket immunoelectrophoresis and measurement of Cp oxidase activity. The concentration of immunoreactive Cp in milk decreased about 9 times during the first 20 days of lactation while the specific oxidase activity decreased only 4 times. Two-dimensional electrophoresis of purified milk Cp before and after its treatment with chelating agents showed that copper atoms in milk Cp are more sensitive to EDTA treatment that those in blood Cp.
