Introduction: Falls account for nearly ¾ of all trauma in the geriatric population. We hypothesized that history and physical could reliably identify elderly patients with ground-level falls (GLF) who require head and cervical spine imaging.

Materials And Methods: Patients of age >65 y with GLF from January, 2018 to December, 2021 at a level 1 trauma center were retrospectively reviewed.

Background: Early diagnosis of systemic light-chain amyloidosis (AL) is needed because 25% of patients die within months of diagnosis. In patients with monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) or smoldering multiple myeloma (SMM) of the λ isotype, we explored the use of 2 screening variables: a free light chain difference of 23mg/L between λ and k and presence of IGLV genes that occur more frequently in AL.

Methods: Patients contacted us and we sent HIPAA release and consent forms for discussion by phone.

Background: As air travel and immobility are risk factors for venous thromboembolism, we aimed to test the hypothesis that internationally transferred trauma patients have a high incidence of venous thromboembolism on arrival.

Methods: A prospectively maintained registry of all international transferred trauma patients who presented to our level I trauma center from January 2023 to June 2024 was retrospectively reviewed. Patients with either lower extremity venous duplex ultrasound or computed tomography scan of the chest with contrast on arrival were included.

Introduction: Vaccine hesitancy poses a threat to the prevention of COVID-19 and other vaccine-controlled diseases. In 2019, the Government of Trinidad and Tobago launched a policy outlining the scope of health services in the public sector available to registered Venezuelan migrants to include access to routine immunizations. Little is understood about immunization uptake among migrants, including the uptake of COVID-19 vaccinations in Trinidad and Tobago.

Article Synopsis
  • Traumatic hemothoraces (HTXs) are common injuries managed with tube thoracostomy (TT), but retained HTX can complicate recovery, potentially leading to conditions like fibrothorax or empyema.
  • The study reviewed six research studies involving 1,319 trauma patients and found that those who received thoracic irrigation during TT had a significantly lower failure rate (10.7% vs. 18.2%) and shorter hospital stays.
  • The conclusion suggests that concurrent TT and thoracic irrigation can reduce retained HTX rates, although more randomized studies are needed to establish formal treatment guidelines.
