The structure and anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity of sulfated polysaccharides (Mzpt) obtained in high yield (60 %) from tetrasporophytes of Mazzaella parksii were studied. Stepwise fractionation with KCl showed that Mzpt consisted of eight (MzptF1-MzptF8) carrageenans fractions, differing in structure and molecular weight. The yield of non-gelling MzptF8 was 58.

Due to the developing resistance and intolerance to antiretroviral drugs, there is an urgent demand for alternative agents that can suppress the viral load in people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Recently, there has been increased interest in agents of marine origin such as, in particular, fucoidans to suppress HIV replication. In the present study, the anti-HIV-1 activity of fucoidans from the brown algae , , , , , and was studied in vitro.

Here, we continued the investigation of anti-HSV-1 activity and neuroprotective potential of 14 polyphenolic compounds isolated from heartwood. We determined the absolute configurations of asymmetric centers in scirpusin A () and maackiazin () as 7,8 and 1″,2″, respectively. We showed that dimeric stilbens maackin () and scirpusin A () possessed the highest anti-HSV-1 activity among polyphenols -.

Spinal muscular atrophy 5q (SMA) is one of the most common neuromuscular inherited diseases and is the most common genetic cause of infant mortality. SMA is associated with homozygous deletion of exon 7 in the gene. Recently developed drugs can improve the motor functions of infants with SMA when they are treated in the pre-symptomatic stage.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on the polyphenolic complex from Maackia amurensis, found in the Maksar product, and its effects against SARS-CoV-2.
  • The complex demonstrated a significant ability to inhibit the cytopathogenic effects of the virus and lower viral RNA levels.
  • It was effective in preventing viral replication, acting directly on the virus and during the early stages of infection.
