The exact etiology and mechanisms that trigger the development of type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1) are not conclusively studied. However, there is increasing scientific evidence that damage to pancreatic islet cells (β-cells) in genetically predisposed individuals is initiated by environmental factors. Exocellular polysaccharides were synthesized by ten strains of 7 saprotrophic mycobacterial species in parallel with their growth. The cultures grew and produced polysaccharides more rapidly in a medium with glucose than in a medium with n-hexadecane. The polymers are homogeneous acid heteroglycans of the regular structure.
