In this paper, we show that native speakers spontaneously divide the complex meaning of a new word into a presuppositional component and an assertive component. These results argue for the existence of a productive triggering algorithm for presuppositions, one that is not based on alternative lexical items nor on contextual salience. On a methodological level, the proposed learning paradigm can be used to test further theories concerned with the interaction of lexical properties and conceptual biases.

Background: Emerging evidence supports the superiority of balanced crystalloids such as Lactated Ringer's (LR) compared to normal saline but concerns for the development of hyperkalemia have limited its use. Although LR inherently contains potassium, there exists a paucity of evidence to suggest that LR could potentiate hyperkalemia. To address this, we evaluated the effect of LR on serum potassium in patients with reduced kidney function who are at risk of developing hyperkalemia.

Background: D-dimer concentration has been used by institutions to identify candidates for intensified anticoagulant treatment for venous thromboembolism prevention and for the mitigation of the microthrombotic complications associated with COVID-19. Thromboelastography (TEG) maximum amplitude (MA) has been validated as a marker of hypercoagulability and MA ≥68 mm has been utilized as a marker of hypercoagulability in other conditions.

Methods: The goal of this study was to evaluate the relationship between coagulation, inflammatory, and TEG parameters in patients with COVID-19 on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
