In vertebrate retinal progenitor cells, the proneural factor Atoh7 exhibits a dynamic tissue and cellular expression pattern. Although the resulting Atoh7 retinal lineage contains all seven major cell types, only retinal ganglion cells require Atoh7 for proper differentiation. Such specificity necessitates complex regulation of Atoh7 transcription during retina development.

We have investigated the role of Vav2, a reported Rac1/Cdc42 GEF, on the development of Xenopus spinal neurons in vitro and in vivo. Both gain and loss of Vav2 function inhibited the rate neurite extension on laminin (LN), while only GFP-Vav2 over-expression enhanced process formation and branching. Vav2 over-expression protected neurons from RhoA-mediated growth cone collapse, similar to constitutively active Rac1, suggesting that Vav2 activates Rac1 in spinal neurons.

Background & Aims: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) tyrosine, methionine, aspartate, aspartate (YMDD) mutants with or without additional compensatory mutations occur in chronically infected patients during lamivudine therapy and may be associated with accompanying viral breakthrough. The aim of this study was to determine whether a predominance of YMDD mutants could be a prognostic marker for occurrence of viral DNA breakthrough.

Methods: YMDD genotypes in 740 consecutive samples collected from 116 patients throughout lamivudine treatment were retrospectively analyzed using a matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS)-based genotyping assay, termed restriction fragment mass polymorphism (RFMP).

Commissural interneurons (CI) of the vertebrate spinal cord are guided ventrally toward the floor plate, but subsequently cross the midline and select a longitudinal fascicle at specific dorsal-ventral (D-V) positions. We examined at high resolution the detailed behaviors of individual pathfinding CI growth cones on the ipsilateral and contralateral sides of the spinal cord of living Xenopus embryos. We find that pre-crossing CI growth cones exhibit distinct pathfinding behaviors compared to post-crossing axons and that the behavioral switch occurs immediately upon crossing to the contralateral side.
