Oil mist emitted during cooking is one of the major sources of atmospheric particulate matter in urban areas. A conventional electrostatic precipitator (ESP) is used in some large restaurants; it requires regular electrode cleaning to maintain particle collection performance. However, oil mist generated during cooking is viscous and difficult to clean with water.

Potentiation of cord blood cell therapy with erythropoietin for children with CP: a 2 × 2 factorial randomized placebo-controlled trial.

Background: Concomitant administration of allogeneic umbilical cord blood (UCB) infusion and erythropoietin (EPO) showed therapeutic efficacy in children with cerebral palsy (CP). However, no clinical studies have investigated the effects of UCB and EPO combination therapy using a 2 × 2 four-arm factorial blinded design with four arms. This randomized placebo-controlled trial aimed to identify the synergistic and individual efficacies of UCB cell and EPO for the treatment of CP.

Repurposing the Cord Blood Bank for Haplobanking of HLA-Homozygous iPSCs and Their Usefulness to Multiple Populations.

Although autologous induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) can potentially be useful for treating patients without immune rejection, in reality it will be extremely expensive and labor-intensive to make iPSCs to realize personalized medicine. An alternative approach is to make use of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) haplotype homozygous donors to provide HLA matched iPSC products to significant numbers of patients. To establish a haplobank of iPSCs, we repurposed the cord blood bank by screening ∼4,200 high resolution HLA typed cord blood samples, and selected those homozygous for the 10 most frequent HLA-A,-B,-DRB1 haplotypes in the Korean population.

Quality comparison of umbilical cord blood cryopreserved with conventional versus automated systems.

Umbilical cord blood (CB) banks usually freeze and store CB for clinical transplantation using conventional controlled-rate freezer or the automated BioArchive system. The aim of this study is to compare the quality of CB cryopreserved with conventional and automated methods and to make clear the cause of the quality difference between the two methods. The experiment used 80 CB units: 40 were conventionally cryopreserved and the remainder were cryopreserved with a BioArchive.

A 2-month-old boy with hemolytic anemia and reticulocytopenia following intravenous immunoglobulin therapy for Kawasaki disease: a case report and literature review.

Herein, we report a rare case of hemolytic anemia with reticulocytopenia following intravenous immunoglobulin therapy in a young infant treated for Kawasaki disease. A 2-month-old boy presented with fever lasting 3 days, conjunctival injection, strawberry tongue, erythematous edema of the hands, and macular rash, symptoms and signs suggestive of incomplete Kawasaki disease. His fever resolved 8 days after treatment with aspirin and high dose infusion of intravenous immunoglobulin.

Deinococcus ruber sp. nov., a radiation-resistant bacterium isolated from soil.

Two gamma- and UVC-resistant bacterial strains, designated JSH3-1T and 9-2-2, were isolated from garden soil in South Korea. Cells were Gram-stain-positive, aerobic, non-motile and spherical. A polyphasic approach was used to study the taxonomic properties of strains JSH3-1T and 9-2-2.

Dietary Sodium Intake in People with Diabetes in Korea: The Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for 2008 to 2010.

Background: Diabetics are likely to receive advice from their physicians concerning lifestyle changes. To understand how much sodium is consumed by diabetics in Korea, we compared the average daily sodium intake between diabetics and non-diabetics after controlling for confounding factors.

Methods: We obtained the sodium intake data for 13,957 individuals who participated in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES), 2008 to 2010, which consisted of a health interview and behavioral and nutritional surveys.

Involvement of Immune Responses in the Efficacy of Cord Blood Cell Therapy for Cerebral Palsy.

This study evaluated the efficacy of umbilical cord blood (UCB) cell for patients with cerebral palsy (CP) in a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial and also assessed factors and mechanisms related to the efficacy. Thirty-six children (ages 6 months to 20 years old) with CP were enrolled and treated with UCB or a placebo. Muscle strength and gross motor function were evaluated at baseline and 1, 3, and 6 months after treatment.

Effect of ethnicity on first trimester biomarkers for combined trisomy 21 screening: results from a multicenter study in six Asian countries.

Objective: To assess differences between first trimester trisomy 21 screening markers free beta chain of the human chorionic gonadotrophin (βhCG) and pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A) in pregnant women of six different Asian countries (China, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam) and compare serum levels with those in women of European countries.

Methods: Median and multiple of median (MoM) values of free βhCG and PAPP-A were determined in more than 3000 pregnant women from the Asian countries during their first trimester of pregnancy. Differences in MoM values between a European reference group from a previous multicenter evaluation and the Asian population were evaluated.

Long-term outcome after endoscopic submucosal dissection for early gastric cancer: focusing on a group beyond the expanded indication.

Objective: To determine the long-term outcome after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) in patients with early gastric cancer (EGC) according to the pathological extent.

Methods: ESD were performed in 280 patients with 309 EGC. The tumors were classified by pathological severity based on absolute indication (AI), expanded indication (EI) or beyond expanded indication (BEI).

Smad3 functions as an integrator of diverse signaling, including transforming growth factor β signaling and the function of Smad3 is complexly regulated by differential phosphorylation at various sites of Smad3. Despite the importance of Smad3 and its various phosphoisoforms, their prognostic significance has rarely been studied. In this study, we demonstrated the prognostic significance of Smad3, its phosphoisoforms, and Smad4 expression by immunohistochemistry in 126 esophageal squamous cell carcinomas.

Overexpression of integrin αv correlates with poor prognosis in colorectal cancer.

Aims: Integrin αv subunits are involved in tumour angiogenesis and tumour progression in various types of cancers. Clinical trials evaluating agents targeting integrin αv are ongoing. Integrin αv expression has been reported in several cancers in association with tumour progression or poor survival.

A case of eosinophilic fasciitis presenting as pitting edema of the lower extremities.

Eosinophilic fasciitis is a rare disease characterized by diffuse fasciitis with peripheral eosinophilia and progressive induration and thickening of the skin and soft tissues. We report a 19-year-old female who presented with pitting edema in both lower extremities. She had a history of excessive physical activity before her symptoms developed.

[Endoscopic submucosal dissection of a leiomyoma originating from the muscularis propria of upper esophagus].

The technique of endoscopic submucosal dissection is occasionally used for resection of myogenic tumors originating from muscularis mucosa or muscularis propria of stomach and esophagus. However, endoscopic treatments for esophageal myogenic tumors >2 cm have rarely been reported. Herein, we report a case of large leiomyoma originating from muscularis propria in the upper esophagus.

Characterization of gibberellin biosynthetic gene cluster from Fusarium proliferatum.

Gibberellins (GAs) are a group of phytohormones that control many developmental processes in higher plants. We report the cloning and expression pattern of gibberellin biosynthesis genes from a new GA-producing fungus, Fusarium proliferatum (strain KGL0401). These genes sequences are deposited in the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) under accession numbers EF119831, EF119832, DQ313173, DQ313174, DQ313175, DQ313176, and DQ313177.

Endoscopic papillary large balloon dilation for the management of recurrent difficult bile duct stones after previous endoscopic sphincterotomy.

Background: Endoscopic management of recurrent bile duct stones after endoscopic sphincterotomy (EST) is effective and safe. However, repeat EST for extension of a previous EST for recurrent bile duct stones may involve substantial risk. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of endoscopic papillary large balloon dilation (EPLBD) without repeat EST for recurrent difficult bile duct stones after previous EST.

Allogenic umbilical cord blood therapy combined with erythropoietin for patients with severe traumatic brain injury: three case reports.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed in patients who had undergone placement of uncovered SEMS as a first-line therapy for inoperable malignant duodenal obstruction from August 2001 to July 2011. Treatment outcomes and complications of the procedures were investigated.
