Multiple myeloma (MM) is an incurable hematologic cancer that originates from plasma cells and occurs primarily in patients over 60. The prognosis of MM has improved after the introduction of new treatments, such as thalidomide, bortezomib, and lenalidomide. However, in recurrent and refractory MM patients, factors such as age and drug toxicity are important when choosing treatment options.

Vancomycin (VAN) is an effective antibiotic against Gram-positive bacteria and the first-line therapy to prevent and treat methicillin-resistant (MRSA) and severe infections. However, low concentrations of VAN can result in resistant strains. High doses of VAN can cause nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity; thus, VAN is a representative drug for which drug monitoring is recommended.

Rapid diagnostic tests based on the lateral flow immunoassay (LFI) enable early identification of viral infection, owing to simple interpretation, short turnaround time, and timely isolation of patients to minimize viral transmission among communities. However, the LFI system requires improvement in the detection sensitivity to match the accuracy of nucleic acid amplification tests. Fluorescence-based LFIs are more sensitive and specific than absorption-based LFIs, but their performance is significantly affected by fundamental issues related to the quantum yield and photobleaching of fluorophores.

Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was used to determine the molecular mechanisms of multidrug resistance for 10 serial bloodstream isolates obtained from a neutropenic patient during 82 days of amphotericin B (AMB) or echinocandin therapy. For WGS, a library was prepared and sequenced using a Nextera DNA Flex Kit (Illumina) and the MiseqDx (Illumina) instrument. All isolates harbored the same Msh2p substitution, V239L, associated with multilocus sequence type 7 and a Pdr1p substitution, L825P, that caused azole resistance.

Article Synopsis
  • - Hepatic diseases like hepatonecrosis and hepatitis can lead to liver failure due to mitochondrial dysfunction and inflammation, prompting a study on the effects of acupuncture at LR3 on liver damage in rats.
  • - The research involved inducing acute liver failure (ALF) in rats using D-galactosamine and treating them with either acupuncture techniques or a positive control, followed by analysis of liver tissues for gene expression related to mitochondrial function.
  • - Results revealed that manual acupuncture (MA) significantly improved mitochondrial gene expression, reduced inflammation, and reversed liver damage, suggesting it may lower the risk of ALF by modulating metabolic and inflammation-related genes in liver mitochondria.

Cytogenetically normal acute myeloid leukemia (CN-AML) accounts for 40%-50% of all AML cases. Despite advances in understanding the molecular pathophysiology of CN-AML, its clinical outcome remains unsatisfactory and unpredictable. To investigate its clinical implication in CN-AML, we measured the expression of prohibitin 2 (PHB2) using immunohistochemical staining (IHCS) of paraffin-embedded bone marrow sections from 134 CN-AML patients.

Blood cancers are difficult to cure completely and frequently show a poor prognosis. Recently, prohibitin 2 (PHB2) has been shown to be a potential biomarker for blood cancers. Sandwich ELISA can be used as a reference method for quantitative analysis of PHB2; however, ELISA can be challenging for early diagnosis and continuous monitoring method due to the need for large sample volumes (25 μL <), technical expertise, complex procedure, relative high cost, and non-portability.
