Article Synopsis
  • Sporothrix schenckii was previously thought to be the only cause of sporotrichosis, but research in 2007 revealed multiple species can cause this disease, with differences in their virulence and antifungal response.
  • The study aimed to analyze 42 clinical isolates of Sporothrix from Colombia using both phenotypic and genotypic methods, focusing on factors like growth conditions and microscopic characteristics.
  • Results identified 32 isolates of S. schenckii and 8 of S. globosa, highlighting the importance of combining phenotypic and molecular techniques for species identification, which is essential for effective treatment.
