Article Synopsis
  • Children with Down syndrome experience two related blood disorders: transient myeloproliferative disorder (TMD) and acute megakaryoblastic leukemia (AMKL), both linked to mutations in the GATA1 gene.
  • Studies show that the presence of trisomy 21 enhances the proliferation of blood cell progenitors in the fetal liver, leading to an increased production of erythroid and megakaryocytic cells.
  • This excessive growth of blood cell progenitors might raise the risk of developing TMD and AMKL by providing a larger pool of cells that could acquire mutations and become cancerous.

Adenocarcinomas arising at ileostomy sites in patients after colon resection for various diseases, such as ulcerative colitis (UC), familial adenomatous polyposis coli, and Crohn's disease, are rare occurrences but have been reported increasingly in the last 20 years. We report a case of adenocarcinoma arising in an ileostomy site in an 85-year-old woman with longstanding UC. She had pancolitis and underwent total proctocolectomy.

Background: Cancer, particularly skin cancer and lymphoma, is a complication of posttransplantation immunosuppression. We investigated the characteristics of cancers in our renal transplant population, the role of type of immunosuppression on cancer incidence, and whether newer, more potent immunosuppressive agents produce cancers sooner after transplantation.

Methods: The charts of patients who developed cancer after renal transplantation between 1958 and 2000 were reviewed.
