Article Synopsis
  • - The study evaluates the Facial Action Summary Score (FASS), a new five-item scale designed to assess postoperative pain in children under 7 who can't self-report pain, particularly focusing on facial expressions.
  • - The FASS demonstrated high internal validity (0.94 ICC) and excellent reliability (0.89 Cronbach's alpha), with strong correlations to existing pain scales, indicating it is a reliable tool for measuring pain.
  • - The findings suggest that using FASS in clinical settings could improve pain management for children post-surgery, with significant strengths like high specificity (97%) and sensitivity (82%), and a low rate of false negatives.

Four behavioral rating scales (BRS) (CHEOPS, CHIPPS, FLACC and OPS) assessing postoperative pain in children aged 1-7 years were studied to compare their psychometric properties, sensitivity and specificity. One hundred and fifty children included in this prospective longitudinal study were videotaped to analyze retrospectively peri-operative behaviors. Pain and anxiety were evaluated by children or by their parents prospectively.
