Association of farmers' knowledge, attitude and practices with bovine brucellosis seroprevalence in Myanmar.

Objective: This study aimed to identify the relationship between bovine brucellosis prevalence, farmers' knowledge, attitude, practice (KAP), and social factors on migratory draft cattle and smallholder dairy farms in the central dry zone of Myanmar.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 54 migratory and 38 dairy cattle farms between August 2020 and February 2021. A structured questionnaire was used to identify farmers' behaviors.

LAIR-1 agonism as a therapy for acute myeloid leukemia.

Effective eradication of leukemic stem cells (LSCs) remains the greatest challenge in treating acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The immune receptor LAIR-1 has been shown to regulate LSC survival; however, the therapeutic potential of this pathway remains unexplored. We developed a therapeutic LAIR-1 agonist antibody, NC525, that induced cell death of LSCs, but not healthy hematopoietic stem cells in vitro, and killed LSCs and AML blasts in both cell- and patient-derived xenograft models.

Comparative Analysis of Body Image Dissatisfaction, Depression, and Health-Related Quality of Life in Adults with Type 1 Diabetes: A Case-Control Study.

(1) Objective: This case-control study investigated body image dissatisfaction, depression, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in adults with type 1 diabetes. (2) Methods: A total of 35 adults with diabetes and an equal number of age- and gender-matched controls were included. Assessment tools used were the Body Image Disturbance Questionnaire (BIDQ), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and the RAND 36-Item Health Survey.

Quantitative, Spatially Defined Expression of Leukocyte-associated Immunoglobulin-like Receptor in Non-small Cell Lung Cancer.

Unlabelled: Targeting the interaction of leukocyte-associated immunoglobulin-like receptor-1 (LAIR-1) and its ligands has been shown to reinstate antitumor immunity. In addition, the introduction of the LAIR-1 decoy protein, LAIR-2, sensitizes previously resistant lung tumors to programmed death-1 (PD-1) blockade, indicating the potential of LAIR-1 as an alternative marker for anti-PD-1 resistance in lung cancer. Here, we assessed LAIR-1 as compared with programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression in various tumors, with a focus on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and its histologic subtypes using multiplexed quantitative immunofluorescence (mQIF) in 287 (discovery cohort) and 144 (validation cohort) patients with NSCLC.

Development of a knowledge broker group to support evidence-informed policy: lessons learned from Myanmar.

Background: Globally, policy-makers face challenges to using evidence in health decision-making, particularly lack of interaction between research and policy. Knowledge-brokering mechanisms can fill research-policy gaps and facilitate evidence-informed policy-making. In Myanmar, the need to promote evidence-informed policy is significant, and thus a mechanism was set up for this purpose.

Water quality and climate variability of urban and tourism areas in Thailand and northern Vietnam: correlations and possible influences on nearby coastal shrimp farms.

This research explored the long-term relationships of climate parameters and coastal water quality nearby shrimp farms in two countries. In Thailand, two sampling points in canals located in Bangkok and Trang provinces were selected as the urban and tourism areas, respectively. In northern Vietnam, the canals located in Thai Binh and Quang Ninh provinces were used as the urban and tourism areas, respectively.

Over the last decade, tremendous progress has been made in the field of adoptive cell therapy. The two prevailing modalities include endogenous non-engineered approaches and genetically engineered T-cell approaches. Endogenous non-engineered approaches include dendritic cell-based systems and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) that are used to produce multi-antigen-specific T-cell products.

Sustained clinical response to infliximab in refractory Cronkhite-Canada syndrome.

A 59-year-old man with refractory Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) had poor clinical response to high-dose intravenous steroids, azathioprine, total parenteral nutrition and best supportive care. He remained highly symptomatic with abdominal pain, diarrhoea, recurrent sepsis and profound weight loss. Infliximab induction was given as rescue therapy, with marked clinical improvement observed within 3 weeks.

Functional modulation of caecal fermentation and microbiota in rat by feeding bean husk as a dietary fibre supplement.

A feeding study using rats was conducted to evaluate the utility of lablab bean husk and soya bean husk as sources of potential prebiotic fibre. Twenty 5-week-old Sprague Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups and fed one of the following diets for 3 weeks: purified diet (AIN93 G) containing 5% cellulose (CEL), or the same diet in which cellulose was replaced by corn starch (STA), lablab bean husk (LBH), or soya bean husk (SBH). Rats were sacrificed at 8 weeks of age and caecal digesta were collected.

Phase II study of tosedostat with cytarabine or decitabine in newly diagnosed older patients with acute myeloid leukaemia or high-risk MDS.

Tosedostat, an oral aminopeptidase inhibitor, has synergy with cytarabine and hypomethylating agents. We performed a Phase II trial to determine rates of complete remission (CR) and survival using tosedostat with cytarabine or decitabine in older patients with untreated acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) or high-risk myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Keratoconus is a corneal disorder characterized by a thinning of stromal tissue, and the affected patients have induced astigmatism and visual impairment. It is associated with a loss of corneal stromal keratocytes (CSKs). Hence, reconstructing stromal tissue with autologous CSK replacement can be a viable alternative to corneal transplantation, which is restricted by the global donor material shortage and graft rejection.

Adjusting DLCO for Hb and its effects on the Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation-specific Comorbidity Index.

The Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation-specific Comorbidity Index (HCT-CI) is used to counsel patients regarding the risk of transplantation and selection of conditioning regimens. Pulmonary disease, most frequently demonstrated by a decreased diffusion capacity of carbon monoxide (DLCO), is the most prevalent comorbidity captured by the HCT-CI. The HCT-CI was validated using the Dinakara method for adjusting DLCO for Hb, but our institution and others utilize the Cotes method.

Community-centred eco-bio-social approach to control dengue vectors: an intervention study from Myanmar.

Objectives: To build up and analyse the feasibility, process, and effectiveness of a partnership-driven ecosystem management intervention in reducing dengue vector breeding and constructing sustainable partnerships among multiple stakeholders.

Methods: A community-based intervention study was conducted from May 2009 to January 2010 in Yangon city. Six high-risk and six low-risk clusters were randomized and allocated as intervention and routine service areas, respectively.

Minimal change disease in graft versus host disease: a podocyte response to the graft?

Nephrotic syndrome is a rare complication of hematopoietic cell transplantation. It has been suggested that nephrotic syndrome may represent a limited form of graft-versus-host disease although the pathological link between these two entities remains unclear. In this paper, we report a case of a 61-year-old female who underwent nonmyeloablative allogenic stem cell transplantation for T-cell prolymphocytic leukemia and subsequently developed biopsy proven minimal change disease shortly after cessation of her immunosuppression therapy.

Pilot study of dacetuzumab in combination with rituximab and gemcitabine for relapsed or refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.

Dacetuzumab, a CD40-targeted, humanized antibody, mediates antitumor activity through effector cell functions and direct apoptotic signal transduction. Preclinical studies demonstrated synergistic activity between dacetuzumab, gemcitabine and rituximab against non-Hodgkin lymphoma in vivo. A phase 1b safety/efficacy study of dacetuzumab in combination with rituximab and gemcitabine was conducted in relapsed/refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL).

Review: Improving the therapeutic index of 8-aminoquinolines by the use of drug combinations: review of the literature and proposal for future investigations.

Because 8-aminoquinolines affect critical survival stages of Plasmodium parasites, treatment and control of malaria could be markedly improved by more widespread use of these drugs; however, hemolytic toxicity, which is widely prevalent in G6PD-deficient patients, severely constrains this use. Primaquine was approved more than 50 years ago after extensive clinical testing. Review of the mid-20th century literature in the light of present understanding of pharmacokinetics and metabolism suggests that manipulation of these factors might dissociate 8-aminoquinoline efficacy from toxicity and lead to an improved therapeutic index.
