Background: Procarbazine-containing chemotherapy regimens are associated with cytopenias and infertility, suggesting stem-cell toxicity. When treating Hodgkin lymphoma, procarbazine in escalated-dose bleomycin-etoposide-doxorubicin-cyclophosphamide-vincristine-procarbazine-prednisolone (eBEACOPP) is increasingly replaced with dacarbazine (eBEACOPDac) to reduce toxicity. We aimed to investigate the impact of this drug substitution on the mutation burden in stem cells, patient survival, and toxicity.

Interpreting the phenotypes of alleles in genomes is complex. Whilst all strains are expected to carry a chromosomal copy conferring resistance to ampicillin, they may also carry mutations in chromosomal alleles or additional plasmid-borne alleles that have extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) activity and/or β-lactamase inhibitor (BLI) resistance activity. In addition, the role of individual mutations/a changes is not completely documented or understood.

Background And Purpose: Recurrent ischemic stroke (RIS) induces additional functional limitations in patients. Prognosticating globally functional outcome (GFO) in RIS patients is thereby important to plan a suitable rehabilitation programme. This study sought to investigate the ability of baseline features for classifying the patients with and without improving GFO (task 1) and identifying patients with poor GFO (task 2) at the third month after discharging from RIS.

Introduction: Pregnant women and their offspring represented a vulnerable patient collective during the Covid-19 pandemic. Beyond the direct effect of SARS-CoV-2 via vertical transmission, an indirect impact on the fetus can occur through placental lesions deteriorating placental villous function. We performed a histopathological analysis of placentas of parturients with SARS-CoV-2 compared to healthy controls.

Background: Patients with prolonged hospitalisation have a significant risk of carriage of and subsequent infection with extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing and carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae. However, the distinctive roles of the community and hospital environments in the transmission of ESBL-producing or carbapenemase-producing K pneumoniae remain elusive. We aimed to investigate the prevalence and transmission of K pneumoniae within and between the two tertiary hospitals in Hanoi, Viet Nam, using whole-genome sequencing.

Introduction: Few longitudinal studies have examined the joint impact of neighborhood segregation and neighborhood socioeconomic status (NSES) in cognitive decline over time.

Methods: This study included non-Hispanic White (NHW, = 209) and Black participants ( = 118) whose cognition was evaluated as part of an ongoing longitudinal study. Four distinct categories of segregation and NSES were evaluated for their association with cognitive outcomes (episodic memory, semantic memory, executive function, and spatial ability) using race-specific mixed-effects models.

Background and objectives Since the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the UK, there has been concern that a higher proportion of COVID-19 deaths among inpatients were a result of nosocomial infections. We sought to investigate the proportion of nosocomial COVID-19 infections within our hospital and patient outcomes within this category. Methods This was a retrospective cohort study of 616 patients admitted to the hospital and tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 through a polymerase chain reaction test with particular emphasis on 104 patients who were classed as probable or definite hospital-acquired COVID-19.

Cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX1/2) have been widely studied and noted for their role in the biosynthesis of inflammation-induced proteins, prostaglandins and thromboxane. Multiple anti-inflammatory drugs have been developed to target these two enzymes, but most of them appeared to have notable adverse effects, especially on the cardiovascular system and lower gastrointestinal tract, suggesting an urgent need for new potent anti-inflammatory drugs. In this study, we screened twenty-two previously synthesized -aryl iminochromenes (NAIs) for their anti-inflammatory activity by performing COX-1/2 inhibitory assays.

Acetyl esterases are an important component of the enzymatic machinery fungi use to degrade plant biomass and are classified in several Carbohydrate Esterase families of the CAZy classification system. Carbohydrate Esterase family 16 (CE16) is one of the more recently discovered CAZy families, but only a small number of its enzyme members have been characterized so far, revealing activity on xylan-derived oligosaccharides, as well as activity related to galactoglucomannan. The number of CE16 genes differs significantly in the genomes of filamentous fungi.

Postmastectomy "dog-ears" are cosmetically displeasing, can contribute to a poorly fitting bra, and may cause discomfort for patients. They occur most commonly in patients with high body mass index and/or large breasts and can be challenging to manage. To avoid the lateral dog-ear following simple mastectomy, we describe the M-plasty with the addition of a lipodermal flap.

Oesophageal dilatation following laparoscopic-assisted gastric banding (LAGB) is a well-described complication reported in up to 80% of LAGB patients [ 1, 2]. Severe oesophageal dilatation in addition to aperistalsis is known as megaoesophagus. Symptomatic compression cardiac compression from oesophageal dilatation as a complication of LAGB is an extremely rare complication and is presented in this case report.

Our recently published joint experiment-theory study of the photo-oxidative intramolecular cyclization of 2'-alkynylacetophenone oximes, performed in collaboration with the de Lijser group, presented the first reported formation of isoindole -oxides. That study focused on determining a mechanistic explanation for the unexpected chemistry observed when three 2'-alkynylacetophenone oximes were photo-oxidized with 9,10-dicyanoanthracene (DCA), specifically the derivatives with a phenyl, isopropyl, or -butyl substituent at the alkynyl group. Here, we use density functional theory to develop a broader understanding of the scope of this chemistry.

Bacteriophages infecting have been less investigated, although the host bacterium is one of the most important fish pathogens causing enteric septicemia of catfish (ESC). We present here two distinctly novel bacteriophages vB_EiM_PVN06 and vB_EiA_PVN09 infecting E1, with their geographical origins from the Mekong Delta, Vietnam. Bacteriophage vB_EiM_PVN06 native to a mud sample reveals complete differences of biological properties with the phage vB_EiA_PVN09 originated from a viscus of a healthy catfish () cultured in the same area.

Coupling of plasmonic nanostructures and semiconductors gives promising hybrid nanostructures that can be used in different applications such as photosensing and energy conversion. In this report, we describe an approach for fabricating a new hybrid material by coupling a gold nanorod (Au NR) core and amorphous molybdenum sulfide (MoS) shell. The Au NR/MoS core-shell structure is achieved by exploiting the hot electrons generated in the plasmonic excitation of Au NRs to drive the reduction of [MoS], which is pre-adsorbed on the Au NR surface, producing a thin MoS layer.
