Article Synopsis
  • Chronic urticaria (CU) in the Asia-Pacific region presents significant challenges for patients, highlighting the need for patient-centred care to involve them in health decisions.
  • A survey and discussions with 13 expert dermatologists and allergists identified barriers to implementing these approaches, including patient awareness, healthcare access delays, financial issues, and low adherence to treatment.
  • Experts recommended enhancing patient education, tailoring treatments to individual needs, promoting shared decision-making, and utilizing patient-reported outcome measures to improve CU management.

Introduction: Maternal disorders are the third leading cause of sepsis globally, accounting for 5.7 million (12%) cases in 2017. There are increasing concerns about the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in bacteria commonly causing maternal sepsis.

Cell motility universally relies on spatial regulation of focal adhesion complexes (FAs) connecting the substrate to cellular motors. In bacterial FAs, the Adventurous gliding motility machinery (Agl-Glt) assembles at the leading cell pole following a Mutual gliding-motility protein (MglA)-guanosine 5'-triphosphate (GTP) gradient along the cell axis. Here, we show that GltJ, a machinery membrane protein, contains cytosolic motifs binding MglA-GTP and AglZ and recruiting the MreB cytoskeleton to initiate movement toward the lagging cell pole.

Acute pancreatitis as an initial manifestation of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) has been rarely reported. We report a case of acute pancreatitis from a hyperfunctioning parathyroid tumor in an 87-year-old woman with drowsy state. Laboratory tests showed high lipase, calcium, and intact parathyroid hormone level, and abdominal computed tomography scan revealed acute pancreatitis.

The predatory deltaproteobacterium Myxococcus xanthus uses a helically-trafficked motor at bacterial focal-adhesion (bFA) sites to power gliding motility. Using total internal reflection fluorescence and force microscopies, we identify the von Willebrand A domain-containing outer-membrane (OM) lipoprotein CglB as an essential substratum-coupling adhesin of the gliding transducer (Glt) machinery at bFAs. Biochemical and genetic analyses reveal that CglB localizes to the cell surface independently of the Glt apparatus; once there, it is recruited by the OM module of the gliding machinery, a heteroligomeric complex containing the integral OM β barrels GltA, GltB, and GltH, as well as the OM protein GltC and OM lipoprotein GltK.

Psoriasis is a common chronic, immune-mediated inflammatory disease of the skin. PSORS1C3 is a non-protein coding gene, of which the RNA transcript is found in psoriatic patients. CARD14 is mainly expressed in epidermal keratinocytes.

Background Generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP) is a chronic disease associated with genetic factors related to mutations of the interleukin 36 receptor antagonist gene (IL36RN) and the caspase recruitment domain 14 gene (CARD14). However, the relevance of these mutations to the clinical features and severity of GPP remains unclear. Aims Our objective was to correlate the presence of IL36RN and CARD14 mutations with the clinical and laboratory findings in patients with GPP.

Background: Bosentan is effective agent in scleroderma vasculopathy. However, there are no studies evaluating effectiveness of bosentan in Vietnamese patients, where nifedipine is still the common treatment.

Objective: To compare the efficacy of bosentan versus nifedipine in scleroderma vasculopathy in Vietnamese patients.

Bacterial cell motility is essential for a range of physiological phenomena such as nutrient sensing, predation, biofilm formation and pathogenesis. One of the most intriguing motilities is bacterial gliding, which is defined as the ability of some bacteria to move across surfaces without an external appendage. In Myxococcus xanthus, gliding motility depends on the assembly of focal adhesion complexes (FAC) which include the Glt mutiprotein complex and allow directional movement of individual cells (A-motility).

, a soil bacterium, predates collectively using motility to invade prey colonies. Prey lysis is mostly thought to rely on secreted factors, cocktails of antibiotics and enzymes, and direct contact with cells. In this study, we show that on surfaces the coupling of A-motility and contact-dependent killing is the central predatory mechanism driving effective prey colony invasion and consumption.

Pulmonary mucoepidermoid carcinoma (PMEC) is an extremely rare tumor of the respiratory system. The clinical presentation of PMEC is variable and nonspecific, including cough, hemoptysis, and wheezing, and may mimic other symptoms of pneumonia or asthma. Here, we present a case of PMEC in a 12-year-old male who was diagnosed with and treated for asthma for 2 years.

Pleuropulmonary blastoma is a rare, aggressive, malignant tumor of the lungs or pleura that primarily affects children. Pleuropulmonary blastoma is classified into 3 types based on morphology, including cystic (type I), mixed (type II), or solid (type III). These morphological types correlate with prognosis.

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a thermal ablation technique widely used for the management of benign thyroid nodules. To date, five academic societies in various countries have reported clinical practice guidelines, opinion statements, or recommendations regarding the use of thyroid RFA. However, despite some similarities, there are also differences among the guidelines, and a consensus is required regarding safe and effective treatment in Asian countries.

Background: The effect of number of health items on out-of-pockets (OOPs) has been identified as a source of bias in measuring OOPs. Evidence comes mostly from cross-sectional comparison of different survey instruments to collect data on OOPs. Very few studies have attempted to validate these questionnaires, or distinguish bias arising from the comprehensiveness of the OOPs list versus specificity of OOPs questions.

Background: Substrate analysis of the left atrium in patients undergoing atrial fibrillation ablation has limitations when performed by means of simple bipolar acquisition.

Objective: To evaluate the incidence of low-voltage zones (LVZs) through maps constructed by means of various catheters: multipolar (MC), omnipolar (OC), and circular catheters (CMCs) with the 3D electro-anatomical systems (3d-S) CARTO3 and EnSite Precision.

Methods: To assess LVZs, we acquired maps by means of CMC and MC in the voltage range 0.

Background: Atrial Fibrillation ablation in older patients represents a challenge to be addressed to ensure the improvement of the quality of life and survival of these patients. New mapping system tools can help to treat older patients because of its ability to simplify and reduce procedural risks. The new NavX EnSite "Live view" tool allows dynamic "beat to beat" activation and voltage mapping visualization in order to instantly recognize vein disconnection and minimize RF deliveries.

Neural-network quantum states have shown great potential for the study of many-body quantum systems. In statistical machine learning, transfer learning designates protocols reusing features of a machine learning model trained for a problem to solve a possibly related but different problem. We propose to evaluate the potential of transfer learning to improve the scalability of neural-network quantum states.
