Synthesis, Structure, and Reactivity of Copper(I) Proazaphosphatrane Complexes.

Copper(I) complexes of isobutyl- () and isopropyl-substituted () proazaphosphatranes have been synthesized. Structural and computational studies of a series of monomeric complexes CuX (X = Cl, Br, I) and dimeric [CuCl] provide insight into the transannulation within and steric properties of the proazaphosphatrane ligand. These halide complexes are competent precatalysts in a model borylation reaction, and the silylamido complex CuN(TMS) catalyzes hydrosilylation of benzaldehyde under mild conditions.

Pathogenic mechanisms of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-associated retinal and choroidal adverse reactions.

Purpose: To summarize and categorize postulated mechanisms of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI)-mediated retinal and choroidal inflammation and discuss resulting implications for evaluation and management of these adverse reactions.

Design: Targeted literature review with interpretation and perspective Methods: We performed a review of selected literature describing immune-mediated retinal and choroidal adverse reactions associated with ICI therapy, synthesizing and categorizing the likely underlying pathogenic mechanisms. Based on these mechanistic categories, we provide perspective on a rational approach to the evaluation of patients with ICI-associated inflammatory disorders of the retina and choroid.

Transition Metal as Template: Reversing the Synthesis Logic in the Preparation of Pincer Complexes.

The conventional synthetic approach to transition metal pincer complexes calls for the preparation of the tridentate pincer (pro)ligand first, with subsequent introduction of the transition metal center as the last step. This work demonstrates that the alternative synthetic logic, where the central main group element is introduced last, can be applicable to a number of PEP pincer complexes (E=B, Al, Si, P) derived from phosphinophenols and phosphinopyrroles. This approach obviates the need to isolate well-behaved propincer precursors, and instead relies on the formation of phosphine-metal adducts first, whose nature determines the stoichiometry of the needed main group reagent to complete the synthesis.

Studies suggest that reduced-nicotine cigarettes decrease nicotine intake and dependence. However, questions remain about reduced-nicotine cigarette abuse liability, whether reduced-nicotine cigarette exposure lowers reduced- and full-nicotine cigarette use, and whether reduced-nicotine cigarettes substitute for full-nicotine cigarettes. This randomized, double-blind laboratory study used operant behavioral economics to examine abuse liability of cigarettes with varying nicotine content.

Multifocal Vitelliform Paravascular Retinopathy (MVPR): A New Disorder in the Vitelliform Spectrum.

Purpose: To describe a new retinal phenotype characterized by bilateral, multifocal, subretinal vitelliform lesions along the vascular arcades that we refer to as multifocal vitelliform paravascular retinopathy (MVPR).

Design: Observational case series.

Methods: Multimodal retinal imaging including color fundus photography, fundus autofluorescence and cross sectional and en-face optical coherence tomography was performed to evaluate and characterize the lesions of MVPR.

R should not be used to describe behavioral-economic discounting and demand models.

Literature concerning operant behavioral economics shows a strong preference for the coefficient of determination (R) metric to (a) describe how well an applied model accounts for variance and (b) depict the quality of collected data. International Classification System for Ocular Complications of Anti-VEGF Agents in Clinical Trials.

Drug Approval for the Treatment of Geographic Atrophy: How We Got Here and Where We Need to Go.

Purpose: To discuss the clinical trial results leading to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of anti-complement therapies for geographic atrophy (GA), perspectives on functional data from the GA clinical trials, and how lessons from the FDA approval may guide future directions for basic and clinical research in AMD.

Design: Selected literature review with analysis and perspective METHODS: We performed a targeted review of publicly available data from the clinical trials of pegcetacoplan and avacincaptad for the treatment of GA, as well as scientific literature on the natural history of GA and the genetics and basic science of complement in AMD.

Results: The approval of pegcetacoplan and avacincaptad was based on an anatomic endpoint of a reduction in the rate of GA expansion over time.

Comparative Analysis of the Donor Properties of Isomeric Pyrrolyl Phosphine Ligands.

Understanding the net donor and electronic properties of pyrrole-based phosphines is critical for guiding their use as ligands. In this study, we compare two isomeric 1- and 2-(diphenylphosphino)methylpyrroles ( and , respectively) to determine the degree to which -(phosphino)pyrroles are distinct from aryl- and 2-pyrrolyl phosphines. Ruthenium, rhodium, platinum, and gold complexes as well as selenide derivatives of these ligands are examined using NMR and IR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, and cyclic voltammetry.

Fundamentally, this concerns the balance between the inside of a biological entity and its environment. Given that the organ of balance is the ear, and that the evolutionary provenance of the vestibular system can be traced back to fish, music provides a rich foundation for evolutionary biological inquiry.

Effect of nicotine expectancy and nicotine dose reduction on cigarette demand, withdrawal alleviation, and puff topography.

Background: Current FDA plans include proposed nicotine reduction mandates by the end of 2023. Most research on reduced nicotine cigarettes has been dose-blinded, while a mandate would be known to the public. Few laboratory studies have examined specifically how low nicotine content labeling impacts behavioral response.

IUPHAR-review: The integration of classic psychedelics into current substance use disorder treatment models.

Substance use disorders (SUDs) have an enormous impact on public health. With classic psychedelic-assisted therapies showing initial promise in treating multiple SUDs, it is possible that these treatments will become legally available options for patients with SUDs in the future. This article highlights how classic psychedelic-assisted therapies might be integrated into current clinical practice.

Purpose: To summarize the scientific evidence that compassion can measurably improve patient outcomes, health care quality and safety, and the well-being of health care providers, and to consider specific strategies for cultivating compassion and better communicating it to patients.

Methods: We selectively reviewed the literature on compassion in health care, including obstacles to its expression and the demonstrated effects of provider compassion on patient outcomes, health care quality and cost, and provider well-being.

Assessing potential of psilocybin for depressive disorders.

Introduction: There has been increasing interest in the role psilocybin may play in the treatment of depressive disorders. Several clinical trials have shown psilocybin to have efficacy in reducing symptoms of depression.

Areascovered: We discuss the current understanding of psilocybin's therapeutic mechanism of action and review existing clinical data investigating psilocybin as a novel therapeutic agent for the treatment of depression.

Naturalistic psilocybin use is associated with persisting improvements in mental health and wellbeing: results from a prospective, longitudinal survey.

Introduction: The classic psychedelic psilocybin, found in some mushroom species, has received renewed interest in clinical research, showing potential mental health benefits in preliminary trials. Naturalistic use of psilocybin outside of research settings has increased in recent years, though data on the public health impact of such use remain limited.

Methods: This prospective, longitudinal study comprised six sequential automated web-based surveys that collected data from adults planning to take psilocybin outside clinical research: at time of consent, 2 weeks before, the day before, 1-3 days after, 2-4 weeks after, and 2-3 months after psilocybin use.

Increase in Retinal Detachment Repair Over a Ten-Year Period at an Academic Center Compared to National Trends.

Background And Objective: This study aimed to determine whether cases of surgical retinal detachment (RD) repair at a tertiary care center from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2020 increased proportionately to macular surgery cases as a control and to national trends.

Patients And Methods: Current Procedural Terminology codes were used to identify cases of primary RD repair (67107, 67108), complex RD repair (67113), pneumatic retinopexy (67110), and vitrectomy with membrane peeling (67041, 67042) at an academic center and in the Part B National Summary Data Files. Numbers of cases and mean case times at the academic center were determined.

RETINAL DEPOSITS OF TRIAMCINOLONE-MOXIFLOXACIN AFTER DROPLESS CATARACT SURGERY.

Purpose: To report a case of epiretinal crystalline deposits observed on fundus examination and optical coherence tomography 2 years after transzonular intravitreal injection of triamcinolone-moxifloxacin (TriMoxi) during "dropless" cataract surgery.

Methods: Observational case report with literature review of toxic effects of intravitreal triamcinolone and differential diagnosis of retinal crystalline deposits.

Results: A 37-year-old asymptomatic pseudophakic man presented with refractile crystalline retinal deposits that had prompted an extensive systemic embolic workup.

Myopic Traction Maculopathy in Low Myopia.

We describe a case of myopic traction maculopathy (MTM) in a patient with low myopia that resolved with surgical intervention. Our patient demonstrated no other features of myopic degeneration and none of the typical tractional elements that cause MTM, such as vitreomacular traction due to partial posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) with vitreomacular adhesion, epiretinal membrane, or a remnant cortical vitreous layer following PVD. Possible pathogenic mechanisms in our patient include reduced compliance of the aging internal limiting membrane and/or traction from elasticity within the thin cortical vitreous layer that forms the posterior wall of the premacular liquefied pocket.
