Article Synopsis
  • Many Parkinson disease (PD) patients experiencing motor complications struggle with managing symptoms through levodopa adjustments, leading to uncertainty about which additional medications are most effective.
  • This study aimed to evaluate the long-term quality of life impacts of adding either a dopamine agonist or a dopamine reuptake inhibitor (MAO-B or COMT inhibitor) to levodopa therapy in PD patients with motor complications.
  • Results showed that while patients using dopamine agonists had slightly better mobility scores compared to those using MAO-B or COMT inhibitors, the difference was not statistically significant.

Unlabelled: The neurodegenerative process in Parkinson's disease (PD) results in a relentless progression of motor and non-motor symptoms. Affected individuals are frequently hospitalised for complications of the disease including falls, fractures, infections, and neuropsychiatric symptoms. When admitted to hospital, inpatient care is often suboptimal as it focusses on the primary cause of admission, and is associated with poor patient outcomes and significant healthcare costs.

Non-motor symptoms are an important part of Parkinson's disease (PD) symptoms complex. They cause a significant burden on the quality of life of patients and their carers and remain a major cause of hospitalisation. Treatment of non-motor symptoms can be challenging as these symptoms are often unresponsive to conventional dopaminergic therapy.
