Objective: The immunosuppressant cyclosporine is widely used to treat Behçet's disease (BD). The aim of this study was to determine whether cyclosporine increases the risk of neurological involvement in BD.

Methods: Patient files from the Ophthalmology Department for the period 2000-2005 were screened retrospectively, and the occurrence of neurological involvement and its relationship to ocular severity were evaluated.

Increased cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) IL-6 has been reported in patients with Behçet's disease (BD) and neurological involvement. To elucidate the value of IL-6 as a marker of disease activity, serum and CSF IL-6 levels of 68 BD patients with acute (26) or chronic progressive (14) parenchymal involvement (pNB), dural sinus thrombosis (10), ischemic stroke (5) or headache (13) were measured by ELISA. Samples from multiple sclerosis, subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, and noninflammatory neurological disorders were used as controls.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between single-channel and banded neural response imaging (NRI) responses and to evaluate whether banded NRI measurements are better correlated to fitting parameters than single-channel NRI measurements.

Patients: Nineteen profoundly deaf subjects implanted with a HiRes 90K cochlear implant from Advanced Bionics Corporation (Valencia, CA).

Intervention(s): Neural response imaging thresholds (tNRIs; single-channel and banded tNRIs) were measured intraoperatively; at first fitting; and after 3, 6, and 12 months of implant use.

Tuz Lake is an inland thalassohaline water body located in central Anatolia that contributes to 60% of the total salt production in Turkey per year. The microbiota inhabiting this lake has been studied by FISH, denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis of PCR-amplified fragments of 16S rRNA genes, and 16S rRNA gene clone library analysis. Total cell counts per milliliter (1.

Prosthetic devices, mainly shunts, are frequently used for temporary or permanent drainage of cerebrospinal fluid. The pathogenesis of shunt infection is a very important problem in modern medicine and generally this is characterized by staphylococcal adhesion to the cerebrospinal fluid shunt surfaces. In this paper, the prevention of the attachment of test microorganism Staphylococcus epidermidis on the cerebrospinal fluid shunt surfaces by 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) precursor modification in the plasma polymerization system, is reported.

Serum concentrations of magnesium, zinc and copper were measured in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis (n = 40), osteopenia (n = 40) or normal bone mineral density (n = 40) as classified on the basis of the T-score of the femur neck and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry results. Mean concentrations of magnesium and zinc were significantly lower in osteoporotic women than in both osteopenic women and normal women. In addition, magnesium and zinc concentrations in osteopenic women were significantly lower than in normal women.

Parenchymal neurological involvement in Behçet's disease (p-NBD) usually presents with a brainstem syndrome; occasionally spinal cord may also be involved. Files of patients with Behçet's disease and spinal cord involvement were reviewed retrospectively, in comparison with other types of p-NBD. Amongst 216 patients with p-NBD, 24 had spinal cord involvement (11%).

Noise in mass spectrometry can interfere with identification of the biochemical substances in the sample. For example, the electric motors and circuits inside the mass spectrometer or in nearby equipment generate random noise that may distort the true shape of mass spectra. This paper presents a stochastic signal processing approach to analyzing noise from electrical noise sources (i.

To compare simultaneous with sequential one-stage (same anaesthesia) combined anterior and posterior spinal surgery in the treatment of spinal infections in terms of the operation time, blood loss and complication rate. Fifty-six patients who underwent one-stage (same anaesthesia) simultaneous or sequential anterior decompression and posterior stabilisation of the involved vertebrae for spinal infection from January 1994 to December 2002 were reviewed. In group I (n=29), sequential anterior and posterior surgery was performed.

Objectives: This study evaluates the effect of plasma treated E-glass fiber to improve the mechanical properties of acrylic resin denture base material, polymethylmethacrlyate (PMMA). Plasma surface treatment of fibers is used as reinforcement in composite materials to modify the chemical and physical properties of their surfaces with tailored fiber-matrix bonding strength.

Methods: Three different types of monomer 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), triethyleneglycoldimethylether (TEGDME) and ethylenediamine (EDA) were used in the plasma polymerization modification of glass fibers.

Kluyveromyces marxianus Y-8281 yeast culture was utilized for the biological treatment of deproteinated whey wastewater in a batch system. Removal of lactose was optimized by the utilization of response surface methodology, RSM. The empirical model developed through RSM in terms of effective operational factors of medium pH, temperature, lactose and ammonia concentrations was found adequate to describe the treatment of deproteinated whey.

This study focused on some mechanical properties such as the transverse strength, the maximal deflection, and the modulus of elasticity of resin reinforced with two different types of agents-treated and with untreated glass fibre, and without fibre. A Teflon mould was used to prepare six groups of specimens. Two different types of chemical modification agents, hydroxyethyl-methacrylate (HEMA)-monomer and air atmosphere were applied to create hydrophilic surfaces on the glass fibres.

Fifty-three consecutive children ages 6 to 14 with femur fractures treated with early percutaneous intramedullary fixation were evaluated retrospectively. The operation was performed within 24 hours in 50 patients and in the remainder after 48 hours. All patients were mobilized and allowed full weight-bearing in a functional brace in the early postoperative period.

An amperometric enzyme electrode integrated with packed-bed column reactors containing immobilised enzymes was improved to measure glucose, sucrose and lactose content of food samples with only one sampling. Performance parameters of the system were investigated on the bases of linearity, sensitivity and response time. Those values were found to be 20 mM, 24.

The role of preliminary traction before closed reduction in the treatment of developmental dysplasia of the hip has been questioned by many authors lately. However, the studies advocating or opposing the use of this treatment modality include several other parameters besides traction. Thus, it is unclear whether the affection is the result of preliminary traction or concurrent variables such as the "human position.

Radioembolization is used in diagnostic imaging of the lungs and for radioembolization therapy of hepatic tumours. Presently, 99mTc labelled macroaggregates or microspheres of human serum albumin (HAM) are used for this purpose. Poly lactic acid (PLA) is biodegradable, like HAM, and, unlike HAM, is not a blood product.
