Electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (ECORR) is a promising approach to synthesize fuels and value-added chemical feedstocks while reducing atmospheric CO levels. Transition metal chalcogenides and halides (TMCs and TMHs) have been extensively used and reported as electrode materials in diverse primary and secondary batteries. This review summarizes the suitability of TMCs and TMHs as electrode materials focusing on thermal batteries (utilized for defense applications) and energy storage systems like mono- and multivalent rechargeable batteries. Tuning the coordination environment and geometric structures of single atom catalysts is an effective approach for regulating the reaction mechanism and maximize the catalytic efficiency of single-atom centers. Here, a template-based synthesis strategy is proposed for the synthesis of high-density NiN sites anchored on the surface of hierarchically porous nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers (Ni-HPNCFs) with different coordination environments. First-principles calculations and advanced characterization techniques demonstrate that the single Ni atom is strongly coordinated with both pyrrolic and pyridinic N dopants, and that the predominant sites are stabilized by NiN sites.

The development of trifunctional electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with deeply understanding the mechanism to enhance the electrochemical performance is still a challenging task. Myosin light chain kinase (MLCK)-dependent phosphorylation of the regulatory light chain (RLC) of cardiac myosin is known to play a beneficial role in heart disease, but the idea of a phosphorylation-mediated reversal of a hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) phenotype is novel. Our previous studies on transgenic (Tg) HCM-RLC mice revealed that the D166V (Aspartate166 → Valine) mutation-induced changes in heart morphology and function coincided with largely reduced RLC phosphorylation in situ. We hypothesized that the introduction of a constitutively phosphorylated Serine15 (S15D) into the hearts of D166V mice would prevent the development of a deleterious HCM phenotype.

Familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is associated with mutations in sarcomeric proteins, including the myosin regulatory light chain (RLC). Here we studied the impact of three HCM mutations located in the NH2 terminus of the RLC on the molecular mechanism of β-myosin heavy chain (MHC) cross-bridge mechanics using the in vitro motility assay. Recent advances in nuclear medicine have allowed for positron emission tomography (PET) to track transgenes in cell-based therapies using PET reporter gene/probe pairs. A promising example for such reporter gene/probe pairs are engineered nucleoside kinases that effectively phosphorylate isotopically labeled nucleoside analogues. Upon expression in target cells, the kinase facilitates the intracellular accumulation of radionuclide monophosphate, which can be detected by PET imaging.
