We have investigated the adsorption and self-metalation of free-base tetraphenyltransdibenzoporphyrin (2H-TPtdBP) on Cu(111) as a function of coverage and temperature using scanning tunneling microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, temperature programmed desorption, and density-functional theory calculations. At low coverages (<0.16 molecules nm), we observe isolated individual molecules with an inverted conformation and no self-metalation up to 363 K.

Pure zinc tetraphenylporphyrin (ZnTPP) adsorbs on rutile TiO(110) as flat-lying molecules, mostly interacting with the surface through weak van-der-Waals interactions. Pure monocarboxyphenyl triphenylporphyrin (2HMCTPP) forms a covalent bond to the rutile TiO(110) surface through the carboxylic acid group, yielding densely-packed layers of upright-standing molecules. If given the chance, 2HMCTPP could therefore be expected to displace the weaker-bonding ZnTPP molecules.

Understanding the adsorption of organic molecules on surfaces is of essential importance for many applications. Adsorption energies are typically measured using temperature-programmed desorption. However, for large organic molecules, often only desorption of the multilayers is possible, while the bottom monolayer in direct contact to the surface cannot be desorbed without decomposition.

Diet shifts and food waste reduction have the potential to reduce the land and biodiversity footprint of the food system. In this study, we estimated the amount of land used to produce food consumed in the United States and the number of species threatened with extinction as a result of that land use. We predicted potential changes to the biodiversity threat under scenarios of food waste reduction and shifts to recommended healthy and sustainable diets.

Background: The detection of antibodies to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is mandatory for the diagnosis, retrospective assessment of disease progression, and correct evaluation of the current infection situation in the population. Many such assays have been launched by various manufacturers. Unfortunately, the new US Food and Drug Administration emergency use regulations have resulted in a situation where laboratories have to perform their own validation studies but many of these laboratories do not have the biobank needed to conduct the studies.

Objective: Numerous immunoassays for detecting antibodies directed against SARS-CoV-2 have been rapidly developed and released. Validations of these have been performed with a limited number of samples. The lack of standardisation might lead to significantly different results.

The classical taxanes (paclitaxel, docetaxel), the newer taxane cabazitaxel and the nanoparticle-bound nab-paclitaxel are among the most widely used anticancer drugs. Still, the optimal use and the value of pharmacological personalization of the taxanes is still controversial. We give an overview on the pharmacological properties of the taxanes, including metabolism, pharmacokinetics-pharmacodynamic relations and aspects in the clinical use of taxanes.

Human histone deacetylase 8 is a well-recognized target for T-cell lymphoma and particularly childhood neuroblastoma. PD-404,182 was shown to be a selective covalent inhibitor of HDAC8 that forms mixed disulfides with several cysteine residues and is also able to transform thiol groups to thiocyanates. Moreover, HDAC8 was shown to be regulated by a redox switch based on the reversible formation of a disulfide bond between cysteines Cys and Cys .

Background And Objectives: Red blood cells that are stored for transfusions as red cell concentrates (RCCs) undergo changes during the storage period, culminating in the lysis of the cells. The goal of this work is to find markers that are linked to high haemolysis, in order to explain the inter-donor variability that is known to occur in storage quality, and also the known differences between RCCs from male and female donors.

Materials And Methods: The relative amounts of lipids at the end of the storage period were compared for one group of low haemolysis samples (24 units, all ≤0·15% haemolysis), and one group of high haemolysis samples (26 units, all ≥0·5% haemolysis).

Reducing food loss and waste (FLW) is widely recognized as an important lever for lowering the environmental impacts of food systems. The United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda includes a goal to reduce FLW by 50% by 2030. Given differences in resource inputs along the food supply chain (FSC), the environmental benefits of FLW reduction will vary by stage of the FSC.

Senescence is the last developmental step in plant life and is accompanied by a massive change in gene expression implying a strong participation of transcriptional regulators. In the past decade, the WRKY53 transcription factor was disclosed to be a central node of a complex regulatory network of leaf senescence and to underlie a tight multi-layer control of expression, activity and protein stability. Here, we identify WRKY25 as a redox-sensitive up-stream regulatory factor of expression.

Objective: Low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) are increasingly experiencing the double burden of malnutrition. Studies to identify 'double-duty' actions that address both undernutrition and overweight in sub-Saharan Africa are needed. We aimed to identify acceptable behaviours to achieve more optimal feeding and physical activity practices among both under- and overweight children in Rwanda, a sub-Saharan LMIC with one of the largest recent increases in child overweight.

Distinct streptomycetes such as Streptomyces mobaraensis produce the protein cross-linking enzyme transglutaminase. Bioinformatic analysis predicted the occurrence of seven sortases exerting transpeptidation reactions similarly to transglutaminase. Here, we report the production and characterization of sortase E2 (Sm-SrtE2) solubilized by removal of its membrane anchor domain.

Household scanner data are increasingly used to inform health policy such as sugar-sweetened beverage taxes. This article examines whether differences in the level of reported expenditures between IRI Consumer Network scanner panel and the Consumer Expenditure Survey (CES) lead to important differences in demand elasticities and policy simulation outcomes. Using each dataset, we estimated a structural consumer demand system with seven food groups and a numéraire good.

Improvements in the healthfulness of packaged foods and beverages through reformulation could help reduce the prevalence of obesity among children and adolescents through improved diet quality. This study assessed changes in calories and four nutrients (saturated fat, total sugars, sodium, and dietary fiber) from 2012 through 2014 for packaged products frequently consumed by children and adolescents, simulated effects of potential improvements in 12 frequently consumed product categories based on actual purchasing patterns, and compared differences in prices of healthier versus less healthy products. Analysis of trends showed limited evidence that healthfulness of foods improved over the years examined.

In BOLERO-2, adding everolimus to exemestane resulted in a twofold increase in median progression-free survival (PFS) vs exemestane in postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive (HR+), human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative (HER2-) advanced breast cancer (aBC) after progression on a non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor (NSAI). Here, we report on the open-label, single-arm, phase IIIB 4EVER trial (NCT01626222). This trial evaluated the clinical effectiveness of everolimus plus exemestane in postmenopausal women with HR+, HER2- aBC who had progressed on or after an NSAI, but with no restrictions on the time of progression after NSAI, prior chemotherapy for advanced disease or previous exemestane.
