The clavicle remains one of the most fractured bones in the human body, despite the fact that little is known about the MR imaging of it and the adjacent sternoclavicular joint. This study aims to establish standardized values for the diameters of the clavicle as well as the angles of the sternoclavicular joint using whole-body MRI scans of a large and healthy population and to examine further possible correlations between diameters and angles and influencing factors like BMI, weight, height, sex, and age. This study reviewed whole-body MRI scans from the Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP), a German population-based cross-sectional study in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Background: Although the severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) tends to be lower in children, it can still lead to severe illness, particularly among those with chronic medical conditions. While remdesivir (RDV) is one of the few approved antiviral treatments for COVID-19 in children in many countries, the available data on the safety of RDV in this population is limited.

Methods: To address this knowledge gap, a multicenter study involving 65 patients retrospectively analyzed the clinical data from individuals aged <18 who were hospitalized due to severe COVID-19 (defined as SpO < 94% or requiring supplemental oxygen) and received at least one dose of RDV.

Shoulder pain is a common issue often linked to conditions such as subacromial impingement or rotator cuff lesions. The role of the acromion in these symptoms remains a subject of debate. This study aims to establish standardized values for commonly used acromion dimensions based on whole-body MRI scans of a large and healthy population and to investigate potential correlations between acromion shape and influencing factors such as sex, age, BMI, dominant hand, and shoulder pain.

Article Synopsis
  • * An 11-year-old girl with fever and abdominal pain was initially suspected of having appendicitis; however, she was later found to have a large mesenteric mass and a diagnosis of necrotic mesenteric lymphadenitis linked to Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C).
  • * Clinicians should be aware of MIS-C and similar inflammatory disorders when diagnosing abdominal conditions; the case highlights how MIS-C can present with symptoms resembling appendicitis, and a proposed diagnostic flow chart could help differentiate between the

Background: In the event of emergency response to large-scale incidents, such as a mass casualty incident (MCI) or a mass casualty incident-infectious disease (MCI-ID), regular training is essential in order to have experienced emergency personnel available in the event of an incident. Due to the pandemic drills often had to be cancelled or were only possible with small groups of people. It was often not possible to simulate a large-scale emergency with actors, so that the trainees could not be offered realistic scenarios of a mass casualty or disease incident.

Article Synopsis
  • * WBCT was associated with a higher Injury Severity Score and longer diagnosis times compared to WBMR, but both methods showed no significant difference in mortality rates.
  • * WBMR is recommended as a radiation-free alternative, particularly for younger patients, although it requires more in-hospital sedation compared to WBCT, indicating the need for further research on its use and effectiveness.

Blunt high-energy chest trauma is often associated with thoracic and abdominal organ injuries. Literature for a hyperextension-distraction mechanism resulting in a costal arch fracture combined with a thoracic spine fracture is sparse. A 65-year-old male suffered a fall from a height of six meters.

Clavicle injuries are common, but only few case reports describe combined clavicular injuries (CCI). CCI include combinations between clavicular fractures and acromioclavicular/sternoclavicular joint dislocations (SCJD). We present the first general therapeutic recommendations for CCI based on a new classification and their distribution.

Background: Lifestyle modification is the cornerstone of management for patients with severe and complicated obesity, but the effects of structured lifestyle programmes on quality of life, anxiety and depression scores and cardiovascular risk factors are not well-described. We sought to describe changes in self-reported quality of life and mental health-related outcomes as well as cardiovascular risk factors in patients completing a 10-week multidisciplinary lifestyle-modification programme.

Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study of all patients referred from our bariatric service who completed the programme between 2013 and 2019.

Purpose: Isolated clavicle fractures (CF) rarely show complications, but their influence in the thorax trauma of the seriously injured still remains unclear. Some authors associate CF with a higher degree of chest injuries; therefore, the clavicle is meant to be a gatekeeper of the thorax.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of the TraumaRegister DGU (project 2017-10) was carried out involving the years 2009-2016 (ISS ≥ 16, primary admission to a trauma center).

Objective: Mis-triage may have serious consequences for patients in mass casualty incidents (MCI) at sea. The purpose of this study was to assess outcome, reliability and validity of an analogue and a digital recording system for triage of a MCI at sea.

Methods: The study based on a triage exercise conducted with a cross-over-design.

Purpose: Although shoulder-girdle injuries occur frequently, injuries of the medial part remain widely unexplored. This study overviews these rare injuries with a focus on incidence, age, and sex distribution in Germany.

Methods: The data are based on diagnoses according to ICD-10 in all German hospitals provided by the German Federal Statistical Office.

Pregnant women and infants are at relatively high risk for influenza- and pertussis-related morbidity and mortality. Vaccination is the most important prevention strategy for both diseases. We evaluated knowledge and acceptance of influenza and pertussis vaccinations among pregnant women.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of nasopharyngeal (NP) carriage and the serotype distribution and antimicrobial resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae in children with chronic diseases, which predisposes them to invasive pneumococcal disease in comparison with that in healthy children. A cross-sectional prevalence study was performed between February 2015 and February 2016 in Istanbul, Turkey. We enrolled 1,024 children with chronic diseases and 394 healthy children aged 0-18 years.

Purpose: Ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) is the most common treatment modality for hydrocephalus. However, VPS infection is a common and serious complication with high rates of mortality and morbidity. The objective of this study was to investigate causative agents and the management of VPS infections and to identify risk factors for re-infection in children.

Introduction: There is still some uncertainty on cord care practices all around the world, especially in developing countries. The aim of our study was to investigate the effects of six different umbilical cord care practices on the rate of colonization and cord separation time.

Methodology: A total of 516 newborns were randomly allocated to the following six umbilical cord care groups: group 1 received dry care; groups 2-4 received a single application of 70% alcohol, 4% chlorhexidine, or povidon-iodine in the delivery room, respectively, which were discontinued thereafter; groups 5 and 6 received a single application of 70% alcohol or 4% chlorhexidine, respectively, starting in the delivery room and continuing every six hours until discharge.

Background: The aim of this study is to compare the diagnostic performance of the line probe assay (LPA) with conventional multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for Streptococcus pneumoniae as well as real-time PCR for Neisseria meningitidis and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from children during the multicenter national surveillance of bacterial meningitis between the years 2006 and 2009 in Turkey.

Results: During the study period 1460 subjects were enrolled and among them 841 (57%) met the criteria for probable bacterial meningitis. The mean age of subjects was 51 ± 47 months (range, 1-212 months).

Infections due to non-tuberculous mycobacteria species are problematic for immunodeficient individuals. Mendelian susceptibility to mycobacterial diseases (MSMD) defines a group of genetic defects affecting cellular interactions and the interferon (IFN)-γ pathway. Patients with MSMD may present with a disseminated infection resulting from the Bacillus Calmette-Guerin vaccine, Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex, environmental nontuberculous mycobacteria or Salmonella species.
