Supra- and infra-torcular double occipital encephalocele.

An encephalocele is a protrusion of the brain and/or meninges through a defect in the skull that is closed or covered with skin. Occipital encephaloceles are the most frequent type in North America and Western Europe, where about 85% of encephaloceles take this form. To the best of our knowledge, there are only three other reported cases of double occipital encephaloceles in the literature.

Neurovascular complications of cervical pedicle screw fixation.

We rarely use the cervical transpedicular fixation (CPF) technique in the neurosurgery departments of the authors' institutions because the pedicle is thin and there is a risk of neurovascular damage. In this study we investigated postoperative neurovascular injury caused by the transpedicular screws of 210 pedicles in 45 patients on whom we performed CPF for various cervical pathologies. Fixation was performed between C3 and C7, and the iliac crest and lamina were used as autografts for fusion.

Replacement of vertebral lamina (laminoplasty) in surgery for lumbar isthmic spondylolisthesis. A prospective clinical study.

Background: The use of lamina as a graft for fusion in isthmic lumbar spondylolisthesis (LIS) is not known. In the present prospective clinical study, we used the laminoplasty technique and reported on its outcomes.

Material And Method: Twenty cases that have been operated in our clinic due to G1 and G2 ISL between February 2003 and December 2006 were clinically and radiologically examined.

Cerebellar mutism following posterior fossa tumor resection in children.

Aim: Cerebellar mutism is a documented complication of posterior fossa surgery in pediatric ages. Risk factors such as the type of tumor, size, and location of tumor, hyrdrocephalus, postoperative cerebellar swelling for cerebellar mutism were investigated in this study.

Material And Methods: A consecutive series of 32 children with a cerebellar tumor were operated on at the Haseki Educational and Research Hospital, Department of Neurosurgery, between 1990 and 2005.

A minimally invasive transmuscular approach to far-lateral L5-S1 level disc herniations: a prospective study.

Background: Among all lumbar disc herniations, L5-S1 far-lateral disc herniations are rare entities. Besides, surgical approach may be difficult because of the very narrow passage at this level. For these 2 reasons, most spine surgeons are not experienced in herniations at this level.

Investigation of the dose-dependent neuroprotective effects of agmatine in experimental spinal cord injury: a prospective randomized and placebo-control trial.

Object: No definitive treatment for spinal cord injuries (SCIs) exists, and more research is required. The use of agmatine [4-(aminobutyl)-guanidine-NH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-NH-C(-NH2)(=NH)], a guanidinium compound formed by decarboxylation of L-arginine by arginine decarboxylase, is a neurotransmitter-neuromodulator with both N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR)-antagonizing and nitric oxide synthase (NOS)-inhibiting activities. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the dose-dependent activity of agmatine, an inducible NOS (iNOS) inhibitor and selective NMDAR antagonist, on biochemical and functional recovery in an experimental rat SCI model.

Asymptomatic chronic ossified epidural hematoma in a child: a rare entity.

A 6-year-old boy presented with an asymptomatic ossified chronic epidural hematoma. He was neurologically intact and had no complaints. This is the first report with a computed tomography image of cerebral compression due to an asymptomatic ossified epidural hematoma.

Cauda equina compression syndrome in a child due to lumbar disc herniation.

Introduction: Cauda equina syndrome with sphincter dysfunction is an uncommon and feared complication of lumbar disc herniation.

Case Report: Lumbar disc disease in the pediatric age has been reported infrequently, but to the best of our knowledge, this is the first pediatric case of acute lumber disc herniation presenting with caudal compression.
