Limiting animal experiments is essential for ethical issues and also because scientific evidence highlights the discrepancies between human and animal metabolism. This review aims to provide a critical discussion of the strengths and limitations of the most appropriate intestine model to answer complex research questions in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical fields. This review describes the components contributing to the definition of the gut barrier structure, from the outer mucus layer to the inner part of lamina propria, including endothelial and neuronal networks.

Seroprevalence data provide relevant information on the development and progression of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study aimed to estimate the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in Mato Grosso State, Brazil, and its distribution according to sociodemographic and economic characteristics. This population-based serological survey was conducted in September-October 2020 in individuals 18 years or older in ten municipalities (counties) in the state of Mato Grosso.

Metabolic bone disorders are one of the most frequent extra-intestinal manifestations in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) that might result in an increase of skeletal fragility and risk of fracture. These disorders are a consequence of bone−gut crosstalk alterations, particularly due to inflammation, which involves the RANK-RANKL-Osteoprotegerin (OPG) pathway. This cross-sectional study investigates the role of serum OPG on bone health in IBD patients.

Background: The appearance of high-density root obturating materials, such as gutta-percha and intracanal posts, on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans is substantially different from that seen in the specimen. This study evaluated the effectiveness of different CBCT software in the reduction of blooming artifacts when examining teeth with intracanal posts.

Method: The sample included 42 human single-rooted teeth with two types of posts: G1 - low-fusion alloy posts; G2 - gold alloy posts.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic multifactorial diseases characterized by partially unclear pathogenic mechanisms including changes in intestinal microbiota. Despite the microbiota, alteration is well established in IBD patients, as reported by 16RNA sequencing analysis, an important goal is to define if it is just a consequence of the disease progression or a trigger factor of the disease itself. To date, gut microbiota composition and gut microbiota-related metabolites seem to affect the host healthy state both by modulating metabolic pathways or acting on the expression of different genes through epigenetic effects.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) are characterized by a multifactorial partially unknown etiology that involves genetic, immunological and environmental factors. Up to 50% of IBD patients experience at least one extraintestinal manifestation; among them is the involvement of bone density which is referred to as metabolic bone disease (MBD), including osteopenia and osteoporosis. Bone alterations in IBDs population appear to have a multifactorial etiology: Decreased physical activity, inflammation-related bone resorption, multiple intestinal resections, dietary malabsorption of minerals and vitamin D deficiency, genetic factors, gut-bone immune signaling interaction, steroid treatment, microbiota and pathogenic micro-organisms interaction, and dietary malabsorption of minerals, that, all together or individually, may contribute to the alteration of bone mineral density.

Background And Aims: Hp(2-20), a derived peptide interacting with N-formyl peptide receptors (FPRs), accelerates the healing of gastric injury in rats. Whether Hp(2-20) affects the recovery of inflamed colonic mucosa is unknown. We evaluated whether Hp(2-20) accelerated the healing of 2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced colitis and explored the mechanism(s) underlying any such effect.

() infection is very common and affects approximately half of the world population. It causes gastric diseases, but some authors have reported an association of infection with other systemic manifestations beginning in 1994. The list of potential effects of outside the stomach includes a number of extragastric manifestations and we focused on neurological, dermatological, hematologic, ocular, cardiovascular, metabolic, allergic, and hepatobiliary diseases.

The study of radiation entrance and exit dynamics and energy consumption in a system is important for understanding the environmental processes that rule the biosphere-atmosphere interactions of all ecosystems. This study provides an analysis of the interaction of energy in the form of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) in the Pantanal, a Brazilian wetland forest, by studying the variation of PAR reflectance and its interaction with local rainfall. The study site is located in Private Reserve of Natural Heritage, Mato Grosso State, Brazil, where the vegetation is a monodominant forest of Vochysia divergens Phol.

Background: Eagle's syndrome comprises a rare disorder caused by compression of an elongated or deformed styloid process or ossified/calcified stylohyoid ligament on neural and vascular structures. It is characterized by facial and neck pain and can be confused with a wide variety of facial neuralgias, oral and dental diseases and temporomandibular disorders. An imaging evaluation associated with a careful clinical examination, are mandatory in structuring a correct differential diagnosis and in the establishment of a proper therapeutic protocol.

The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of impacted teeth in a subpopulation of Brazilian patients based on the retrospective analysis of panoramic radiographs obtained at an oral radiology clinic. Out of 1,977 panoramic radiographs, 1,352 fulfilled inclusion criteria, and 22,984 teeth were assessed. Data were statistically analyzed using Kolmogorov-Smirnov's and Levene's tests; significance was set at 5%.
