Dual-mobility bearings have been found to reduce the rate of dislocation following both primary and revision total hip arthroplasty. Their unique design involves two articulating surfaces which increases construct stability but also leaves them susceptible to a unique complication known as intraprosthetic dislocation (IPD). We report the case of a 33-year-old female who sustained an IPD following closed reduction.

Inappropriate prescribing of antibiotics has been widely recognised as a leading cause of antimicrobial resistance, which in turn has become one of the most significant threats to global health. Given that most antibiotic prescriptions are issued in primary care settings, investigating the associations between primary care prescribing of antibiotics and subsequent infection-related hospitalisations affords a valuable opportunity to understand the long-term health implications of primary care antibiotic intervention. A narrative review of the scientific literature studying associations between primary care antibiotic prescribing and subsequent infection-related hospitalisation was conducted.

Repeated European surveys of newborn bloodspot screening (NBS) have shown varied strategies for collecting missed cases, and information on data collection differs among countries/regions, hampering data comparison. The ECFS Neonatal Screening Working Group defined missed cases by NBS as either false negatives, protocol-related, concerning analytical issues, or non-protocol-related, concerning pre- and post-analytical issues. A questionnaire has been designed and sent to all key workers identified in each NBS programme to assess the feasibility of collecting data on missed cases, the stage of the NBS programme when the system failed, and individual patient data on each missed case.

Previous research has shown that (ACEs) are associated with negative health outcomes, including depression, problematic alcohol use, and disordered patterns of overeating, including food addiction (FA). Moreover, anhedonia, or an inability to feel pleasure, has been also shown to increase risk for problematic alcohol use, as well as FA. It is possible that anhedonia may be implicated in health risk behaviors as individuals with anhedonia may seek out highly hedonic activities.

Background: Despite significant efforts to improve access to medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD), uptake remains low relative to the scope of the problem in the United States. A growing body of quantitative and qualitative research has documented consistent barriers to MOUD treatment access and retention, at the level of individuals, institutions, and society at large. Stigma - surrounding both people who use opioids (PWUO) and treatment using MOUD - is among the most-cited barriers by patients and providers alike, yet few studies have examined provider-based stigma specifically, or considered its interaction with other impediments to OUD care.

Background: Despite a long history of investigation and sustained efforts in clinical testing, the number of market authorisations for mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) therapies remains limited, with none approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration. Several barriers are impeding the clinical progression of MSC therapies, to the forefront of these is a lack of standardised manufacturing protocols which is further compounded by an absence of biologically meaningful characterisation and release assays. A look at clinical trial registries demonstrates the diversity of MSC expansion protocols with variabilities in cell source, isolation method and expansion medium, among other culture variables, making it extraordinarily difficult to compare study outcomes.

The COVID-19 pandemic has exerted a global impact on both physical and mental health, and clinical populations have been disproportionally affected. To date, however, the mechanisms underlying the deleterious effects of the pandemic on pre-existing clinical conditions remain unclear. Here we investigated whether the onset of the pandemic was associated with an increase in brain/blood levels of inflammatory markers and MRI-estimated brain age in patients with chronic low back pain (cLBP), irrespective of their infection history.

Significant evidence suggests that the failure of clinically tested epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors ( erlotinib, lapatinib, gefitinib) in glioblastoma (GBM) patients is primarily attributed to insufficient brain penetration, resulting in inadequate exposure to the targeted cells. Molecular imaging tools can facilitate GBM drug development by visualizing drug biodistribution and confirming target expression and localization. To assess brain exposure PET molecular imaging, we synthesized fluorine-18 isotopologues of two brain-penetrant EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors developed specifically for GBM.

Postoperative delirium (POD) is a prevalent clinical entity characterized by reversible fluctuating altered mental status and cognitive impairment with acute and rapid onset a few days after major surgery. Postoperative cognitive decline (POCD) is a more permanent extension of POD characterized by prolonged global cognitive impairment for several months to years after surgery and anesthesia. Both syndromes have been shown to increase morbidity and mortality in postoperative patients making their multiple risk factors targets for optimization.

Necroptosis, a pathway of regulated necrosis, involves recruitment and activation of RIPK1, RIPK3 and MLKL, leading to cell membrane rupture, cell death and release of intracellular contents causing further injury and inflammation. Necroptosis is believed to play an important role in the pathogenesis of kidney ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI). However, the dynamics of necroptosis in kidney IRI is poorly understood, in part due to difficulties in detecting phosphorylated MLKL (pMLKL), the executioner of the necroptosis pathway.

Two factors that decrease the replicability of studies in the scientific literature are publication bias and studies with underpowered desgins. One way to ensure that studies have adequate statistical power to detect the effect size of interest is by conducting a-priori power analyses. Yet, a previous editorial published in the reported a median sample size of 19 and the scarce usage of a-priori power analyses.

Rare diseases are underrepresented in biomedical research, leading to insufficient awareness. Zhu-Tokita-Takenouchi-Kim (ZTTK) syndrome is a rare disease caused by genetic alterations that result in heterozygous loss-of-function of SON. While ZTTK syndrome patients suffer from numerous symptoms, the lack of model organisms hamper our understanding of both SON and this complex syndrome.
