Article Synopsis
  • The Fifth Triglav Lake, located in the protected Triglav National Park in the Julian Alps, has faced significant human impact despite its remote setting, particularly due to eutrophication since fish were introduced in 1991.
  • A multiattribute decision model using the DEX method has been developed to assess the lake's ecological effects based on four main parameters: trophic state, lake characteristics, environmental parameters, and anthropogenic stressors.
  • This model and accompanying findings aim to aid scientists in comprehending lake-watershed interactions and assist local authorities in effectively managing and monitoring the aquatic environment.

A combination of molecular and stable isotope analyses was used to trace and identify the sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in sediments of Lake Bled (NW Slovenia). Sediment samples were taken from two locations with contrasting depositional regimes: Zaka Bay, with permanently oxic bottom and station D, where anoxic conditions prevail throughout the year. The concentrations of PAH in surface sediments at the two locations were comparable and higher than in previous studies, reaching 4230 and 4380 ng g(-1), respectively.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were measured in sediment cores from two contrasting depositional regimes in urban Lake Bled (NW Slovenia). The concentration of PAH in surface sediments, mostly derived from combustion, was higher in Zaka Bay where bottom waters are permanently oxic, than in the western basin where bottom waters oscillate between suboxic and anoxic (1930 vs. 1150ngPAHg(-1) dry weight (dw), respectively).

Lake Pamvotis is a shallow Mediterranean lake located in northwestern Greece that has been recognized as an internationally important conservation site. Here, an unprecedented investigation was undertaken to obtain and evaluate data related to sedimentary organic matter, hydrocarbon content, and stable isotopes of Lake Pamvotis sediments, thus tracking the origin of organic inputs and providing a record of environmental status. The study revealed a distinct spatial distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with values between 34.

The historical record of the input of pyrolysis-derived pollutants via the atmosphere, i.e. black carbon (BC), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and spheroidal carbonaceous particles (SCP) was measured in the sediments of three remote alpine lakes situated in the Julian Alps, northwest Slovenia.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and black carbon (BC) were measured in alpine Lake Planina (Slovenia) sediment. Lake Planina is a remote mountain lake with almost no direct anthropogenic influence. Long-distance atmospheric deposition is a major pathway for the loading of contaminants to the sediment.

Black carbon (BC) contents were measured in recent sediments in five high altitude remote alpine lakes, i.e. Lake Krisko Sup.
