Overweight and obesity are closely linked to gut dysbiosis/dysmetabolism and disrupted De-Ritis ratio [aspartate aminotransferase (AST)/alanine aminotransferase (ALT) ratio], which may contribute to chronic noncommunicable diseases onset. Concurrently, extensive research explores nutraceuticals, and health-enhancing supplements, for disease prevention or treatment. Thus, sedentary overweight volunteers were double-blind randomized into two groups: Novel Nutraceutical_(S) (without silymarin) and Novel Nutraceutical (with silymarin).

Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is an inflammatory skin reaction whose incidence has increased and has been associated with a dietary pattern rich in saturated fats and refined sugars. Considering the increased incidence of ACD and the lack of research about the influence of a short-term high-sugar diet on dermatitis, our aim is to improve understanding of the influence of a high-sugar diet on ACD. We introduced a diet rich in sugar fifteen days before inducing contact dermatitis with oxazolone, in mice, and maintained it until the end of the experiment, which lasted three weeks in total.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers studied the effects of an early exercise program on cardiac dysfunction in rats with aortic stenosis, focusing on how exercise impacts heart structure and function post-surgery.
  • The study involved different groups of rats, including a trained group, and used treadmill running for 16 weeks to assess improvements in heart health and metabolism.
  • Results showed that early exercise significantly enhanced functional capacity and reduced heart remodeling and dysfunction, while also benefiting lipid metabolism and angiogenesis in the trained aortic stenosis rats.

Autophagy plays a vital role in cell homeostasis by eliminating nonfunctional components and promoting cell survival. Here, we examined the levels of autophagy signaling proteins after 7 days of overload hypertrophy in the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) and soleus muscles of control and diabetic rats. We compared control and 3-day streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats, an experimental model for type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM).

Introduction: Exercise is an important therapeutic strategy for preventing and treating myocardial infarction (MI)-induced cardiac remodeling and heart failure. However, the myocardial effects of resistance exercise on infarcted hearts are not completely established. In this study, we investigated the effects of resistance exercise on structural, functional, and molecular cardiac alterations in infarcted rats.

Article Synopsis
  • In pathological cardiac hypertrophy, the heart prioritizes glucose over fatty acids for energy, driven by factors like oxygen deficiency that activate HIF-1α, crucial for glucose metabolism.
  • The study investigates the changes in HIF-1α and glycolysis during the transition from heart hypertrophy to heart failure (HF) using Wistar rats over different time points.
  • Results showed early increases in HIF-1α and glycolysis, with a shift to anaerobic metabolism associated with worsening heart function, confirming the hypothesis of altered glucose metabolism during cardiac remodeling.

Unlabelled: Although current guidelines recommend resistance exercise in combination with aerobic training to increase muscle strength and prevent skeletal muscle loss during cardiac remodeling, its effects are not clear. In this study, we evaluated the effects of resistance training on cardiac remodeling and the soleus muscle in long-term myocardial infarction (MI) rats.

Methods: Three months after MI induction, male Wistar rats were assigned to Sham ( = 14), MI ( = 9), and resistance exercised MI (R-MI, = 13) groups.

Many mathematical models have been proposed to predict death following the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19); all started with comorbidity subsets for this still-little understood disease. Thus, we derived a novel predicted probability of death model (PDeathDx) upon all diagnostic codes documented in the Department of Veterans Affairs. We present the conceptual underpinnings and analytic approach in estimating the independent contribution of pre-existing conditions.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), often associated with obesity, is becoming one of the most common liver diseases worldwide. It is estimated to affect one billion individuals and may be present in approximately 25% of the population globally. NAFLD is viewed as a hepatic manifestation of metabolic syndrome, with humans and animal models presenting dyslipidemia, hypertension, and diabetes.

Unlabelled: This study sought to identify monocyte alterations from septic patients after hospital discharge by evaluating gene expression of inflammatory mediators and monocyte polarization markers. It was hypothesized that sepsis reprograms the inflammatory state of monocytes, causing effects that persist after hospital discharge and influencing patient outcomes.

Design: The gene expression patterns of inflammatory receptors, M1 and M2 macrophage polarization markers, NLRP3 inflammasome components, and pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in monocytes were assessed.

Objective: Risk for asthma in the overweight/obese may be mediated by adiponectin and peroxisome proliferator activated receptor pathways and may be reduced by the use of oral drugs impacting these pathways, such as angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE-I), thiazolidinediones (TZD), and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB). Our study objective was to determine whether ACE-I, TZD, and/or ARB use in overweight/obese adults with diabetes mellitus and/or hypertension is associated with a lower risk for incident asthma.

Methods: Using an existing cohort of American veterans, we performed a longitudinal data analysis over 15 years.

The role of microRNAs in metabolic diseases has been recognized and modulation of them could be a promising strategy to treat obesity and obesity-related diseases. The major purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that intramuscular miR-1 precursor replacement therapy could improve metabolic parameters of mice fed a high-fat diet. To this end, we first injected miR-1 precursor intramuscularly in high-fat diet-fed mice and evaluated glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity, and adiposity.

Smoking has been associated with renal disease progression in ADPKD but the underlying deleterious mechanisms and whether it specifically worsens the cardiac phenotype remain unknown. To investigate these matters, Pkd1-deficient cystic mice and noncystic littermates were exposed to smoking from conception to 18 weeks of age and, along with nonexposed controls, were analyzed at 13-18 weeks. Renal cystic index and cyst-lining cell proliferation were higher in cystic mice exposed to smoking than nonexposed cystic animals.

Agomelatine (AGO) is an antidepressant drug with agonistic activity at melatonin receptor 1 (MT1) and MT2 and with neutral antagonistic activity at serotonin receptor 5-HT2. Although experimental studies show that melatonin reduces hypertriglyceridemia and hepatic steatosis induced by excessive fructose intake, no studies have tested if AGO exerts similar actions. To address this issue we have treated male Wistar rats with fructose (15% in the drinking water) and/or AGO (40 mg/kg/day) for two weeks.
