Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between acquired antithrombin deficiency in patients undergoing postcardiotomy extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (PC-ECMO) and thromboembolic or haemorrhagic events such as bleeding, peripheral arterial thromboembolism, and ischemic cerebrovascular events.

Methods: The study was designed as a single-center, prospective study and conducted at our hospital between November 2019 and June 2021. 50 patients who underwent ECMO due to postcardiotomy cardiogenic shock were included in the study.

Background: The use of a venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in the postcardiotomy shock setting (PC-ECMO) can be life-saving. Risk stratification for patients under PC-ECMO is currently challenging. The aim of this study was to assess the discriminatory ability of the different available risk scores for mortality in PC-ECMO patients.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigated if low pectoralis muscle mass, also known as sarcopenia, is linked to a higher risk of long-term mortality in patients using left ventricular assist devices (LVAD).
  • - Out of 64 included patients, 21 (32.8%) were identified as sarcopenic, and these patients showed significantly worse 2-year survival rates compared to those without sarcopenia.
  • - Sarcopenia increased the risk of death within two years by more than four times, highlighting its importance as a potential risk factor for patient outcomes in this population.

Background: This study aims to investigate the effect of cardiopulmonary bypass on antibody titers in patients vaccinated against the severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass.

Methods: Between October 2021 and October 2022, a total of 70 patients (44 males, 26 females; mean age 59.9±10.

Introduction: Vasoplegia denotes a state of low tissue perfusion characterized by hypotension, tachycardia, and low systemic vascular resistance. This state results in increased mortality and morbidity following cardiac surgery. A better understanding of the associated risk factors will guide the surgical team in patient management.

Introduction: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a life-saving treatment in cardiogenic and respiratory shock. It is prone to various complications, infection being among the most frequent. This study aims to define the prevalence and characteristics of infections in ECMO patients in a tertiary care center for cardiac diseases.

Objective: Pump thrombosis in left ventricular assist device (LVAD) patients is an important cause of mortality and morbidity. Inflow cannula migration is a predisposing factor for pump thrombosis. Telecardiographic measurements can be used to follow up apical cannula deviation.

Article Synopsis
  • Infective endocarditis (IE) is a serious but rare condition in Turkey, likely more common due to predisposing factors and higher rates of healthcare-associated infections, affecting both young and older populations.
  • Diagnosis is often delayed, with many patients not identified until three months after their initial visit, and the detection rate of causative organisms is notably lower compared to developed countries.
  • There is an urgent need for improved diagnostic, treatment, and prevention strategies in Turkey, including standardized processes and a collaborative effort among healthcare specialists to establish better management guidelines for IE.

Background: This study aims to investigate the relationship between the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and renal injury in patients under extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support for postcardiotomy shock.

Methods: Between January 2007 and July 2018, a total of 119 patients (38 males, 81 females; mean age 54.4±13.

Objectives: To evaluate the cost of healthcare with respect to the quality of anticoagulation in patients with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) treated with warfarin in daily practice via the database analysis of a tertiary care center in the period 2010 to 2013.

Methods: Of 258 307 records in total, 42 582 unique patients with DVT and 32 012 patients with international normalized ratio (INR) measurements were included. Overall, 6720 unique patients with DVT diagnosis and one or more INR measurements were identified, and the records of 4377 out of 6720 unique patients were validated and included in the analysis data set.

Background: The coexistence of coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) is a risk factor for stroke and death. The aim of this study is to evaluate the potential of the SYNTAX score (SXscore) for predicting carotid stenosis in patients undergoing CABG.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 291 patients (225 males, mean age 60.

Objective: To evaluate the international normalized ratio (INR) monitoring patterns in patients with deep vein thrombosis.

Methods: Of 32,012 patients with ≥1 outpatient INR measurement and 42,582 patients with confirmed deep vein thrombosis diagnosis registered to our hospital between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2013, 6720 records were identified to have both deep vein thrombosis and international normalized ratio measurement, and 4.377 out of 6.

Objectives: Although coronary angiography (CAG) is generally performed to rule out coexisting coronary artery disease in patients with cardiac myxoma, its necessity to evaluate vascular supply of the myxoma is debatable. The aim of this article is to evaluate clinical experience and CAG findings in our patient group.

Methods: This retrospective analysis was performed in 46 patients (17 men, mean age 57.

Despite technological advances, the long-term outcomes of endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR) are still debatable. Although most endograft failures after EVAR can be corrected with endovascular techniques, open conversion may still be required. Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between the diameter of coronary artery stents and age, gender, diabetes mellitus (DM), left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), renal dysfunction, and the clinical presentation of myocardial ischemia in the cohort of patients with implanted stents in coronary arteries with severe stenotic lesions.

Methods: This study included 2256 patients (mean age, 59.3±10.

The Chiari network is described as a reticulated network of fibers connected to the Eustachian valve identified as the embryological remnant of the right valve of the sinus venosus. It is an incidental finding without any significant pathophysiological consequences. However, the presence of the Chiari network in the right atrium obliges the physician to differentiate from other right atrial pathologies.

Objective: Though 30-day rates of readmission for coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) remain high, readmission rates and associated risk factors have not been well examined. The purpose of the present study was to determine the risk factors for and rates of readmission and to compare two revascularization methods on that basis.

Methods: The study included 2664 consecutive patients who underwent coronary revascularization either with CABG surgery or PCI.

A 59-year-old male patient admitted to our hospital with a pulsatile right gluteal mass with history of formation after blunt trauma. Persistent sciatic artery and its traumatic aneurysm was diagnosed after medical examination followed by peripheric digital substraction angiography. Surgery was performed under general anesthesia, and the patient was discharged from the hospital on postoperative day 7 without any problems.

Floating thrombus in the ascending aorta is rare and its association with papillary thyroid adenocarcinoma has not been documented. We report a case of a 64-year-old man who was referred to our emergency unit because of suspected type A aortic dissection. Computerized tomographic and transthoracic echocardiographic scans revealed a floating thrombus in the aneurysmatic ascending aorta.
