Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare serum Metrnl levels in pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) to those without it, involving a total of 180 participants.
  • Results showed that women with GDM had significantly lower median serum Metrnl levels (1.16 ng/mL) compared to healthy controls (2.2 ng/mL).
  • The study concluded that decreased serum Metrnl levels in GDM patients could indicate a potential biomarker for the condition, although the reasons for this decrease are still unknown and require further research.

Objective:  Preeclampsia, whose pathophysiology is still not fully elucidated today, is a pregnancy-specific disease that affects most organ systems in pregnant women, including the central nervous system. In this context, we aimed to investigate the effects of preeclampsia on blood flow in the ophthalmic artery of the eye, which is considered a part of the central nervous system.

Materials And Methods:  This prospective, non-interventional cohort study was conducted between February 2022 and June 2022 at Umraniye Training and Research Hospital, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Istanbul, Turkey.

Objective: Studies have shown that members of the salusin family regulate the migration and proliferation of arterial smooth muscle cells and increase the tendency to atherosclerosis through fibrosis and calcification in the vascular wall. However, the effect of salusins on the uterine artery has not yet been investigated. This study was conducted to investigate whether serum salusin alpha and beta concentrations in the first trimester are associated with diastolic notching in uterine artery Doppler.

Objective: Isthmin 1 (ISM1) is an adipokine that improves hyperglycemia by increasing glucose uptake in a non-insulin-dependent manner. Studies have shown that ISM is associated with the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Based on this, we aimed to investigate serum ISM1 concentrations of pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to examine afamin levels in pregnant women with late fetal growth restriction (FGR) or small for gestational age (SGA) during the third trimester.
  • It involved 126 participants, including 42 with late FGR, 43 with SGA, and 41 healthy controls, measuring and comparing their serum afamin concentrations.
  • Results showed that women with late FGR had significantly higher afamin levels (199 ng/mL) compared to those with SGA (153 ng/mL) and controls (108 ng/mL), suggesting afamin could be useful for predicting late FGR, though further research is needed.

Background: Several factors may influence newborn thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) concentrations and cause subclinical hypothyroidism in a newborn. A sufficient level of leptin signalling is needed for the normal production of TSH and thyroid hormones by the thyroid gland. Our study aimed to investigate the correlation between maternal serum leptin concentration during the third trimester of pregnancy and newborn screening-TSH levels.

In the literature, many cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) positive pregnancies have been observed, mostly with mild findings, but there is limited evidence about perinatal transition and early COVID-19 positive newborns. In this case, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction results were studied from samples obtained from the placenta, amniotic fluid, cord blood and postoperative breast milk - that were obtained while avoiding contamination and preserved appropriately - of a cesarean section performed under anesthesia on a woman with previous cesarean section and gestational diabetes mellitus history. This patient who presented to our emergency gynecology clinic with membrane rupture was infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 two weeks before delivery but was not treated as the disease was asymptomatic.

Perchlorate, thiocyanate, and nitrate can block iodide transport at the sodium iodide symporter (NIS) and this can subsequently lead to decreased thyroid hormone production and hypothyroidism. NIS inhibitor exposure has been shown to reduce iodide uptake and thyroid hormone levels; therefore we hypothesized that maternal NIS inhibitor exposure will influence both maternal and newborn thyroid function. Spot urine samples were collected from 185 lactating mothers and evaluated for perchlorate, thiocyanate, and nitrate concentrations.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at a protein called S6K1 to see how it relates to early and advanced endometrial cancer.
  • They found that 56.1% of the cancer samples tested positive for S6K1, while none of the normal samples did.
  • Higher levels of S6K1 positivity were found in more severe cases of cancer, suggesting that S6K1 can help predict how serious the cancer is.
