The gastrointestinal tract may contribute to the regulation of systemic inflammation and skin diseases due to the balance between the pathogenic, opportunistic, and beneficial bacterial species it contains. External supplementation of beneficial bacteria, besides its known positive effect in the treatment of digestive system diseases, also has different favorable effects such as accelerated wound healing, suppression of inflammation, lower infection risk, and reduced antibiotic requirement. It has been reported that oral use of probiotics may be effective in the treatment of skin diseases such as acne, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) following endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is the preferred treatment for cholelithiasis with common bile duct stones. However, the optimal timing of LC after ERCP remains controversial. This study aimed to identify the ideal time interval between ERCP and LC.

Background: Selective biliary cannulation (SBC) is a prerequisite for successful endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). SBC has the potential to fail in as many as 20% of cases, even with skilled endoscopists. Precut incision techniques like needle-knife sphincterotomy (NKS) and transpancreatic septotomy (TPS) can be used in cases where standard cannulation techniques fail.

Background And Aim: The histological diagnosis of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is challenging. A new consensus recommendation was provided by the International AIH Pathology Group to address the problems in the histological diagnosis. The purpose of this study is to compare the 2008 'simplified' criteria for AIH with the 'consensus recommendation' of 2022 in terms of diagnostic sensitivity.

Background And Aims: Currently malignancies of the liver are the sixth most frequently diagnosed cancers worldwide. The admission of patients to hospitals decreased due to the restriction of the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVİD-19) pandemic, especially patients suspected with cancer were delayed in their diagnosis and treatment. With this study, we aimed to investigate whether the Covid-19 pandemic caused a decrease in the number of hepatocellular cancers (HCC) or a delay in its diagnosis.

Background And Aims: Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), a novel inflammatory marker, has been shown to increase in various systemic inflammatory conditions. In this way, we want to evaluate the relationship between the presence of , duodenal ulcer related and NLR in dyspeptic patients.

Material And Methods: The patients were divided into three groups after evaluating of the EGD and histopathology results.

Background: Mirizzi syndrome is a gallstone disease characterized by compression of extrahepatic biliary duct with an impacted stone. Our aim is to identify and describe the incidence, clinical presentation, operative details and the association postoperative complication of Mirizzi syndrome in patients undergoing endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).

Methods: The ERCP procedures were held in Gastroenterology Endoscopy Unit and retrospectively evaluated.

Background: Non-alcoholic hepatic steatosis (NAS) is characterized by excess fat accumulation in hepatocytes, causing portal and lobular inflammation and hepatocyte injury.

Objective: We aimed to evaluate the alterations in monocyte count to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (MHR) in patients with grade 2 or 3 fatty liver disease and the association of this marker with liver function tests and insulin resistance.

Methods: In this retrospective analysis; patients diagnosed and followed for the grade 2 or 3 fatty liver disease were included in the patient group and the patients who had undergone abdominal ultrasound for any reason and who were not having any fatty liver disease were included in the control group.

Aim: In this study, we aimed to define the predictive role of liver function tests at admission to the hospital in outcomes of hospitalised patients with COVID-19.

Material And Method: In this multicentric retrospective study, a total of 269 adult patients (≥18 years of age) with confirmed COVID-19 who were hospitalised for the treatment were enrolled. Demographic features, complete medical history and laboratory findings of the study participants at admission were obtained from the medical records.

Background/aim: Chitotriosidase and YKL-40, also called chitinase 3-like protein 1, are homologs of family 18 glycosyl hydrolases, secreted by human macrophages and granulocytes under inflammatory conditions. Although increased levels of chitotriosidase and YKL-40 are linked with several inflammatory diseases, the physiological utility of these two enzymes is still not fully characterized. This study aims to analyse the serum YKL-40 and chitotriosidase levels of acute pancreatitis patients to assess whether their activity correlates with acute pancreatitis and its severity.

Background And Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate whether the long-term (≥4 weeks) use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) is a risk factor for intubation requirement and mortality in patients hospitalized for COVID-19.

Materials And Methods: In this multicentric retrospective study, a total of 382 adult patients (≥18 years of age) with confirmed COVID-19 who were hospitalized for treatment were enrolled. The patients were divided into two groups according to the periods during which they used PPIs: the first group included patients who were not on PPI treatment, and the second group included those who have used PPIs for more than 4 weeks.

Background/aim: Malnutrition is an important and commonly seen prognostic factor in patients with cirrhosis. The diagnosis of malnutrition in cirrhosis patients may be challenging, and an easily measured and widely usable marker is lacking. Prealbumin, however, is an easily measured marker.

Background/aim: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) often requires deep sedation. Propofol provides adequate sedation and amnesia at subhypnotic doses, but safe guarding the patient’s airway is important for preventing respiratory depression or hypoxic events. This study compared sedation levels, operator satisfaction, intraoperative and recovery characteristics using sevoflurane with nasal mask and propofol in ERCP.

Background/aim: Crohn’s disease (CD) is a kind of inflammatory bowel disease. Midkine (MDK) is an endogenous inflammatory marker. We aimed to investigate the relationship between MDK levels and inflammation and hence determine whether MDK can be used as a noninvasive biomarker in active CD.

Introduction: infection is encountered in more than 50% of the world population. A high rate of clarithromycin resistance is observed among strains in some regions because clarithromycin is a drug commonly used for the treatment of other infections.

Aim: To identify an efficient eradication protocol for patients infected with and to suggest an alternative first-line therapy particularly in countries with high clarithromycin resistance.

Background: The use of needle-knife fistulotomy technique in patient with periampullary diverticula (PAD) for biliary duct cannulation may lead to risk of complications. The present study aimed to investigate the association between PAD and the complications of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), unsuccessful cannulation rates and to determine the rates of cannulation complications using sphincterotomy and needle-knife fistulotomy.

Materials And Methods: The ERCP procedures were held in Gastroenterology Endoscopy Unit between September 2015 and October 2016 and were retrospectively evaluated.

Introduction: Video endoscopic diagnosis of gastric varices is particularly limited, owing to the deep submucosal or subserosal location of the varices and the normal appearance of the overlying mucosa.

Aim: We present and emphasise the value of computerised tomography (CT) examination in the early detection of gastric varices (GVs).

Material And Methods: In this retrospective study, a total of 216 consecutive patients with cirrhosis were evaluated at the Turkiye Yuksek Ihtisas Training and Research Hospital between September 2008 and March 2011.

Ankaferd Blood Stopper (ABS), a hemostatic agent of plant origin, has been registered for the prevention of clinical hemorrhages. Currently there is no data regarding the ultrastructural analysis of ABS at the tissue level. The aim of this study is to assess renal tissue effects via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses for the ABS and ABS nanohemostat (formed by the combination of self-assembling peptide amphiphile molecules and ABS).
