First-bite syndrome (FBS) is manifested as acute and severe pain in the parotid region occurring at the first bite of a meal. While most cases of FBS arise after surgeries involving the deep lobe of the parotid gland, chemotherapy-induced FBS is extremely rare. Some adverse effects of oxaliplatin resemble FBS, suggesting it may be under-recognized.

Exciton binding energy (E) is understood as the energy required to dissociate an exciton in free-charge carriers, and is known to be an important parameter in determining the performance of organic opto-electronic devices. However, the development of a molecular design to achieve a small level of E in the solid state continues to lag behind. Here, to investigate the relationship between aggregation and E, star-shaped π-conjugated compounds DBC-RD and TPE-RD were developed using dibenzo[g,p]chrysene (DBC) and tetraphenylethylene (TPE).

Introduction: Incretin-based drugs are extensively utilized in the treatment of type 2 diabetes (T2D), with remarkable clinical efficacy. These drugs were developed based on findings that the incretin effect is reduced in T2D. The incretin effect in East Asians, whose pancreatic β-cell function is more vulnerable than that in Caucasians, however, has not been fully examined.

Keloids are characterized by abnormal wound healing with excessive accumulation of extracellular matrix. Myofibroblasts are the primary contributor to extracellular matrix secretion, playing an essential role in the wound healing process. However, the differences between myofibroblasts involved in keloid formation and normal wound healing remain unclear.

Background: Primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) is characterized by the development of hypergonadotropic hypogonadism before 40 years of age and leads to intractable infertility. Although in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer with donated eggs enables pregnancy, not a few patients desire pregnancy using their oocytes. However, follicular development is rare and unpredictable in patients with POI.

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common disorder resulting in irregular menstruation and infertility due to improper follicular development and ovulation. PCOS pathogenesis is mediated by downregulated follicle-stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR) expression in granulosa cells (GCs); however, the underlying mechanism remains elusive. Unkeito (UKT) is a traditional Japanese medicine used to treat irregular menstruation in patients with PCOS.

Purpose: Although proximal gastrectomy (PG) is commonly used in patients with upper gastric cancer (GC) and esophagogastric junction (EGJ) cancer, long-term prognostic factors in these patients are poorly understood. The double-flap technique (DFT) is an esophagogastrostomy with anti-reflux mechanism after PG; we previously conducted a multicenter retrospective study (rD-FLAP) to evaluate the short-term outcomes of DFT reconstruction. Here, we evaluated the long-term prognostic factors in patients with upper GC and EGJ cancer.

We studied photoinduced charge transfer (CT) states and their dissociation processes at the donor/acceptor (D/A) interface of PTB7/BTAx (x = 1 and 3) nonfullerene organic thin-film solar cells using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations. We focused on the CT distances and electron coupling in the CT state generated by photoexcitation and the Huang-Rhys (HR) factors that describe the nonadiabatic processes associated with vibronic interactions. The PTB7/BTA3 system with a large short-circuit current density (JSC) exhibited a large charge CT distance and electronic coupling.

Article Synopsis
  • Proximal gastrectomy (PG) using the double-flap technique (DFT) has a risk of causing metachronous remnant gastric cancer (MRGC), with unclear follow-up protocols after surgery.
  • A study of 471 patients revealed an 8.9% incidence of MRGC, with early-stage cancer diagnoses linked to regular follow-up endoscopies, leading to no MRGC-related deaths.
  • The research indicates that eradicating Helicobacter pylori infection significantly lowers MRGC incidence, highlighting the importance of both early detection and H. pylori treatment in improving patient outcomes after PG with DFT.

Lead (Pb) is an environmental pollutant that adversely affects various organs in the human body and is a well-known risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, caused by the dysfunction of vascular endothelial cells that cover the luminal surface of the blood vessels. The Zrt- and Irt-like related protein (ZIP) transporter ZIP8 is one of the primary importers of zinc, iron, manganese, and cadmium, and its expression appears to be important for the metabolism of these metals. In the present study, we investigated the influence of ZIP8 on Pb-induced cytotoxicity in vascular endothelial cells, induction of ZIP8 expression by Pb, and its mechanism of action in vascular endothelial cells.

Retained products of conception (RPOC) is a common cause of postpartum bleeding, which may be life-threatening; however, no evidence-based guidelines exist to assist in evaluating the risk of massive hemorrhage in women with RPOC. In this prospective study, we aimed to evaluate the predictive factors for massive hemorrhage in women with RPOC. The primary and secondary endpoints were to validate the usefulness of power Doppler color scoring (PDCS) in evaluating hypervascularity and to identify other predictive factors (such as maximum RPOC diameter and serum βhCG and Hb level at first visit), respectively.
