A 22-year-old Vietnamese man was referred to our hospital owing to cough, dyspnea, and difficulty moving. The patient was diagnosed with community-acquired Panton-Valentine leukocidin-positive methicillin-resistant (MRSA) bacteremia and necrotizing pneumonia. Treatment involved vancomycin (VCM) and meropenem, and the MRSA bacteremia improved.

Spontaneous resolution of inflammatory myopathy involving the masseter muscle following COVID-19 mRNA vaccination.

According to previous reports, most cases of inflammatory myopathy following messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccination can be classified as idiopathic inflammatory myopathy, particularly dermatomyositis, owing to their similar clinical features and courses. However, some patients have different clinical features and courses. We report a rare case of transient inflammatory myopathy involving the masseter muscle following the third dose of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) mRNA vaccination.

Factors affecting patient safety culture in a university hospital under the universal health insurance system: A cross-sectional study from Japan.

We conducted a cross-sectional study of patient safety culture aimed at examining the factors that influence patient safety culture in university hospitals under a universal health insurance system. The Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality was used. The survey was distributed to 1066 hospital employees, and 864 responded.

A case of acute inhalation injury caused by premeditated chlorine gas exposure.

Chlorine is a toxic gas that causes severe inhalation injury. We report the case of a 43-year-old woman who inhaled chlorine gas generated by mixing household bleach and vinegar. She was referred to our hospital because she had developed respiratory failure.

Safety and efficacy of cold polypectomy compared to endoscopic mucosal resection and hot biopsy polypectomy.

Recently, several studies have demonstrated the usefulness of cold polypectomy (CP), a safe and simple method for the removal of small polyps. We investigated the safety and efficacy of CP compared to that of endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) and hot biopsy polypectomy (HB). We retrospectively examined 1713 colorectal polyps (size 1-9 mm) in 731 patients.

Patient safety education using an arts and health approach in Japanese university hospitals: a pilot study.

Background: Recently, arts and health activities have been introduced into health care, and evidence of their effectiveness has been accumulating. However, few studies have examined this subject in Japan.

Methods: In this practice-based report, faculty of a Japanese school of medicine and a university of arts and design collaborated to explore the effectiveness of an arts and health approach in three different patient safety educational programs implemented in different university hospitals in Japan.

[Synchronous gastrointestinal stromal tumors of the rectum and duodenum: a case report].

An 85-year-old woman with anemia underwent colonoscopy, which revealed a 25-mm submucosal tumor with ulceration in the lower rectum. Histological examination of a biopsy showed that the lesion was a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST). Subsequent esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed a submucosal tumor in the duodenum, and examination of a biopsy obtained by endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration also confirmed that this lesion was a GIST.

[Three cases of pedunculated gastric hamartomatous inverted polyps resected endoscopically].

We report three cases of pedunculated gastric hamartomatous inverted polyps (HIPs) that were successfully treated by endoscopic polypectomy. The first case involved an 87-year-old woman with mild anemia. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) revealed a pedunculated, reddish polyp located at the greater curvature of the upper stomach.

[Recurrent advanced gastric cancer diagnosed 20 years after partial gastrectomy].

A 67-year-old woman underwent partial gastrectomy (por2+sig, stage IIIA) for gastric cancer. She was admitted to our hospital because of swelling of her left neck lymph nodes 20 years after surgery. A biopsy specimen revealed poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma with signet-ring cell carcinoma.

Tocilizumab is a monoclonal antibody against human interleukin-6 receptor which blocks the binding of interleukin-6 to its receptor. Tocilizumab is effective for the treatment of inflammatory disorders including rheumatoid arthritis. We report a case of multiple ulcers in the small and large intestines, which occurred during tocilizumab therapy.

Generation of transgenic mice for conditional overexpression of Sox9.

Sox9 belongs to the family of Sry-related high-mobility group box transcription factors controlling cell fate, cell proliferation and differentiation in various tissues, including cartilage, testis, the central nervous system, kidney, and gastrointestine. Mice conditionally lacking Sox9 have revealed essential roles for Sox9 in these tissues. To gain further insight into the role of Sox9 in different tissues and at different stages of development, we have generated a transgenic mouse line to express Sox9 in a Cre recombinase-dependent manner.

Persistent gut motor dysfunction in a murine model of T-cell-induced enteropathy.

Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients in remission often experience irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)-like symptoms. We investigated the mechanism for intestinal muscle hypercontractility seen in T-cell-induced enteropathy in recovery phase.

Methods: BALB/c mice were treated with an anti-CD3 antibody (100 microg per mouse) and euthanized at varying days post-treatment to investigate the histological changes, longitudinal smooth muscle cell contraction, cytokines (Th1, Th2 cytokines, TNF-alpha) and serotonin (5-HT)-expressing enterochromaffin cell numbers in the small intestine.

Impact of double-balloon endoscopy on the diagnosis of jejunoileal involvement in primary intestinal follicular lymphomas: a case series.

Gastric emptying in diabetic patients by the (13)C-octanoic acid breath test: role of insulin in gastric motility.

Background: Impairment of gastric emptying is well recognized in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM), especially long-standing insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). The aim of this study was to evaluate the cause of delayed gastric emptying in DM patients.

Methods: In 16 controls, 16 non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) patients and 23 IDDM patients, gastric emptying was studied using the (13)C octanoic acid breath test.

HCO(-3)-dependent pHi recovery and overacidification induced by NH+4 pulse in rat lung alveolar type II cells: HCO(-3)-dependent NH3 excretion from lungs?

Intracellular pH (pHi) after the NH+4 pulse addition and its removal were measured in isolated alveolar type II cells (ATII cells) using BCECF fluorescence. In the absence of HCO(-3), the NH+4 pulse addition increased pHi (alkali jump) and its removal decreased pH(i) (acid jump) to the control level (no overacidification). This pHi change was induced by reaction 1 (NH3 + H+ <--> NH+4).

Background And Aim: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can prevent colorectal cancer (CRC), but their effect is limited. Recent studies have shown the involvement of 15-lipoxygenase-1 (15-LOX-1) in NSAID-induced apoptosis in colorectal carcinoma cells. We evaluate whether 15-LOX-1 expression influences the sensitivity of NSAID-induced apoptosis in CRCs.

Retention behavior of oligomeric proanthocyanidins in hydrophilic interaction chromatography.

A novel method was developed for the separation of proanthocyanidins (PAs; oligomeric flavan-3-ols) by hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) using an amide-silica column eluting with an aqueous acetonitrile mobile phase. The best separation was achieved with a linear gradient elution of acetonitrile-water at ratios of 9:1 to 5:5 (v/v) for 60 min at a flow rate of 1.0 ml/min.

[Case of juvenile parkinsonism in pregnancy].

Detection of eight antibodies in cancer patients' sera against proteins derived from the adenocarcinoma A549 cell line using proteomics-based analysis.
