Background: Accumulating evidence suggests that rapid eye movement sleep (REM) supports the consolidation of extinction memory. REM is disrupted in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and REM abnormalities after traumatic events increase the risk of developing PTSD. Therefore, it was hypothesized that abnormal REM in trauma-exposed individuals may pave the way for PTSD by interfering with the processing of extinction memory.

The number of patients requiring breast reconstruction with artificial implants has been increasing, and so is the use of carbon-ion radiotherapy (CIRT). Consequently, a growing number of patients with artificial breast implants are expected to undergo CIRT. Because artificial breasts are composed of a silicone polymer gel with a silicon-oxygen backbone, which differs significantly from human tissues, the stopping power ratio for carbon beams cannot be accurately converted from CT values using standard CT-to-stopping power ratio tables (CT-SP tables).

Article Synopsis
  • Penile Mondor's disease (PMD) is a rare and usually benign condition caused by thrombophlebitis of the superficial dorsal vein of the penis, but in this case, it was a sign of lung adenocarcinoma.
  • A 46-year-old Japanese man initially presented with PMD, which led to the diagnosis of advanced stage IVA lung cancer, complicated by deep vein thrombosis and nonbacterial thrombotic endocarditis.
  • This case emphasizes the need for doctors to consider potential underlying cancers in patients with unusual clotting issues, as well as the varied ways cancer can present itself.

Nanoparticles have useful functions due to the characteristics conferred on them by an increase in their specific surface area, and they have already been put into practical use in products in various industrial fields. Although exposure to nanoparticles in daily life is unavoidable for pregnant women, studies that evaluate the toxicity of nanoparticles in pregnant women are lacking. To redress this, we have focused on the placenta and have previously revealed that nanoparticles can show placental toxicity.

Background: Not only gray matter lesions (GMLs) but also white matter lesions (WMLs) can play important roles in the pathology of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The progression of cognitive impairment (CI) and behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) might be caused by a concerted effect of both GML and WML.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the association between GML and WML and how they are involved in the symptoms of CI and BPSD in dementia patients by means of imaging technology.

Fucosylated proteins are widely used as biomarkers of cancer and inflammation. Fucosylated alpha-fetoprotein (AFP-L3) is a specific biomarker for hepatocellular carcinoma. We previously showed that increases in serum AFP-L3 levels depend on increased expression of fucosylation-regulatory genes and abnormal transport of fucosylated proteins in cancer cells.

Background And Purpose: Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) reportedly ameliorates cognitive function in patients with chronic cerebrovascular insufficiency. However, its efficacy in healthy adults is ambiguous. It was reported that concentrations of terpene lactones, active components of GBE that are present in very low concentrations in the brain, were significantly increased following administration of a mixture of GBE, sesame seed, and turmeric (GBE/MST) in mice.

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a strong risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD) independent of ischemic stroke. However, the clinicopathological impact of AF on the severity of AD has not been well elucidated. We aimed to investigate the clinical differences between dementia patients with AF and those without AF by means of imaging data.

Histidine-rich glycoprotein (HRG) is abundant plasma protein with various effects on angiogenesis, coagulation, and immune responses. Previously, we identified the base and amino acid sequences of equine HRG (eHRG) and revealed that eHRG regulates neutrophil functions. In this study, we first conducted a large-scale gene analysis with DNA samples extracted from 1700 Thoroughbred horses and identified unique insertion/deletion polymorphisms in the histidine-rich region (HRR) of eHRG.

Flunixin meglumine (FM), a nonselective cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitor, is most frequently selected for the treatment of equine systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS)/endotoxemia. However, FM has considerable adverse effects on gastrointestinal function. The aims of this study were to compare the effect of meloxicam (MX), a COX-2 selective inhibitor commonly used in equine clinical practice, with FM, and to investigate the potential for clinical application in horses with SIRS/endotoxemia.

Background And Purpose: In terms of the gut-brain axis, constipation has been considered to be an important factor of neurodegenerative diseases, although the exact mechanism is still controversial. Herein, we aimed to investigate the contribution of constipation to the progression of dementia in a retrospective study.

Methods: Patients of Alzheimer's disease(AD) and amnestic mild cognitive impairment were consecutively screened between January 2015 and December 2020, and those of whom brain MRI and neuropsychological tests were performed twice were enrolled in this study.

Both objective and perceived social isolations were associated with future cognitive decline and increase risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the impacts of perceived social isolation depending on different clinical stages of AD have not been elucidated. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of perceived social isolation or loneliness on brain structure and future cognitive trajectories in patients who are living with or are at risk for AD.

Aim: Depression is a heterogeneous disorder that has various subtypes. In Japan, however, a prevailing misunderstanding is that the term utsu-byo (clinical depression) indicates only the melancholic type. Consequently, a subtype called 'modern-type depression' (MTD), which has contrasting features to those of melancholic or traditional-type depression (TTD), is severely stigmatized in Japan these days.

Although severe blood coagulopathy in horses with acute colitis causes multiple organ failure, which may be fatal, few studies have focused on the correlation between the fluctuations of coagulation parameters and severity of colitis. In this study, we evaluated the fluctuations of coagulation parameters in 14 Thoroughbred racehorses with acute colitis for 5 days from the day of hospitalization and compared them between 5 survivors and 9 non-survivors. Noteworthy features in the non-survivors were that antithrombin activity and fibrin degradation products continuously decreased and increased, respectively, for 4 days or more and that thrombin-antithrombin complexes increased in the last 2 days before death.

Background: In Japan, psychiatrists have noted two different types of depression, traditional/melancholic depression and 'modern-type' depression (MTD). Although both the modern and the traditional types of depression overlap in regard to symptoms, these are two distinct syndromes, which can lead to confusion for Japanese people.

Aims: This study aims to examine impressions of two types of depression using vignettes and clarify the differences in perceptions of the two types.
