Primary care researchers are increasingly at the forefront of developing innovations and new research methods to address complex issues in health care, including multi-morbidity, social determinants of health, health equity, managing population health in clinical practice, patient satisfaction, and provider burnout. Research demonstrates that "primary care is the only health care component where an increased supply is associated with better population health and more equitable outcomes." As a primary care specialty, family medicine has evolved beyond its initial focus on clinical practice and education to realizing the imperative for the discipline to robustly engage in research and embrace the responsibility to generate the evidence that drives changes in primary care practice and policy.

We have performed a lab-based hypergravity cultivation experiment using a centrifuge equipped with a lighting system and examined long-term effects of hypergravity on the development of the main axis of the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh.) primary inflorescence, which comprises the rachis and peduncle, collectively referred to as the main stem for simplicity.

Macroautophagy (hereafter autophagy) is an intracellular degradative pathway in budding yeast cells. Certain lipid types play essential roles in autophagy; yet the precise mechanisms regulating lipid composition during autophagy remain unknown. Here, we explored the role of the Osh family proteins in the modulating lipid composition during autophagy in budding yeast.

Caspases cleave over 1500 substrates in the human proteome in both lethal and non-lethal scenarios. However, reports of the physiological consequences of substrate cleavage are limited. Additionally, the manner in which caspase cleaves only a subset of substrates in the non-lethal scenario remains to be elucidated.

Here, we report a case of mediastinal mesenchymal tumor with a pericytic neoplasm feature that responded to radiation therapy. A 43-year-old man visited our hospital with a complaint of esophageal obstruction and chest pain. Chest computed tomography revealed a middle mediastinal tumor and a mesenchymal tumor was diagnosed with a pericytic neoplasm feature by video-assisted thoracoscopic biopsy.

MPIase is a glycolipid involved in membrane protein integration in the inner membrane of Escherichia coli. To overcome the trace amounts and heterogeneity of natural MPIase, we systematically synthesized MPIase analogs. Structure-activity relationship studies revealed the contribution of distinctive functional groups and the effect of the MPIase glycan length on membrane protein integration activity.

The effect of group medical visits (GMV) compared to individual medical visits (IMV), on weight and blood pressure in a large primary care practice serving a predominantly underserved population, was assessed. The records of 304 patients attending a weight-loss program were analyzed using mixed-effects regression models. Patients in GMV lost an average of 11.

Aim: This observational study aimed to describe the rate and degree of difficult experiences with COVID-19 pandemic-related changes (DE) during pregnancy, clarify the relationship between DE and self-compassion of women postnatally, and investigate the influence of compassion from a partner (CP) and compassion from the woman's mother (CM) on this relationship.

Methods: Data from 46 1-month postnatal women in Japan were collected through a self-report questionnaire from October to December 2020. Self-compassion was measured using the Japanese version of the Self-Compassion Scale; DE, CP, and CM were measured using original questions based on prior studies.

Autophagy is regulated by phosphoinositides. We have previously shown that phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate (PtdIns(4)P) is localized in the autophagosomal membrane. Additionally, in yeast cells, phosphatidylinositol 4-kinases Pik1p and Stt4p play important roles in the formation of the autophagosome and its fusion with the vacuole, respectively.

Article Synopsis
  • Inducing proteins into their proper locations is crucial for all organisms, and this process involves protein factors like Sec translocons and YidC, as well as the glycolipid MPIase.
  • The study highlighted that a simplified version of MPIase, called mini-MPIase-3, retains key integration features, and using various physicochemical methods, researchers analyzed how MPIase interacts with the Pf3 coat protein.
  • Results showed that the structure of MPIase, particularly its sugar chain and specific functional groups, significantly influences its ability to bind to and integrate membrane proteins, revealing the detailed mechanisms behind this biological process.

Introduction: Nationally, mental illness prevalence is comparable among Native Americans and Whites experiencing alcohol and nicotine use disorders. However, authors are concerned that mental illness in Native Americans with substance use disorders may be disparately underdiagnosed in medical settings. For 3 states with large Native American populations, this study compares the prevalence of mental illness diagnoses among Native Americans and Whites hospitalized with alcohol/nicotine use disorders.

Decision simulation technology is known to augment health practitioner education and training; little is known about its use for educating lay health practitioners about cancer prevention. We report the development and evaluation of a decision simulation component of a skin cancer risk reduction electronic training (e-training) for massage therapists (MTs). Simulation facilitated tracking and analysis of MTs' selected dialog options leading to client-focused helping conversations (MT conversations intended to encourage client pro-health behavior) regarding skin cancer risk reduction.

Background: Skin cancer affects millions of Americans and is an important focus of disease prevention efforts. Partnering with non-health care practitioners such as massage therapists (MTs) can reduce the risk of skin cancer. MTs see clients' skin on a regular basis, which can allow MTs to initiate "helping conversations" (ie, brief behavioral interventions aimed at reducing the risk of skin cancer).

Introduction: Most smoking quit attempts end in relapse, and interventions focused on relapse prevention are lacking. Helpers Stay Quit (HSQ) is a novel behavioral relapse prevention intervention that teaches newly abstinent smokers to offer a "helping conversation" (HC) to help others quit tobacco.

Methods: Pre-post intervention feasibility study with state quitline participants ≥14 days abstinent.

Naloxone is a μ-opioid receptor antagonist that has been used to prevent overdose-related respiratory depression and deaths by the illicit use of opioids. Naloxone can also deter the abuse potential of opioids, but little has been reported regarding its antagonistic activity profile against opioid-induced psychological dependence. This study aimed to confirm the antagonistic activity profile of naloxone against several μ-opioid receptor agonists and investigate whether naloxone could affect the psychological dependence induced by widely used μ-opioid receptor agonist, oxycodone.

Purpose: Obesity increases the severity of asthma, and patients with severe asthma are often complicated with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), a concomitant disease of obesity. We investigated whether intermittent hypoxia (IH), which is a physiological feature of OSAS, modifies allergic airway inflammation in a murine model of asthma.

Methods: Balb/c mice were sensitized by ovalbumin (OVA) intraperitoneally twice (days 1 and 14) and challenged with intranasal OVA three times (days 21, 22, and 23).

Background: Skin cancer, the most common cancer in the United States, is costly and potentially deadly. Its burden can be reduced by early detection and prevention activities. The scope of skin cancer requires going beyond traditional health care providers to promote risk reduction.

Introduction: Despite progress in reducing tobacco use within the general population, high prevalence of tobacco use continues in individuals with mental health and substance use disorders ("clients"). Tobacco use persists as the leading cause of premature mortality in this population. While behavioral health providers have frequent contacts with this population, they lack training in tobacco cessation counseling.

Background: Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the US. Training massage therapists (MTs) in skin cancer prevention and detection creates opportunity for reducing skin cancer burden. Little is known about MTs' perceptions of skin cancer prevention and detection, their discussions of these topics with clients, or their referral recommendations for suspicious skin lesions.
