Motivated by the exceptional optoelectronic properties of 2D Janus layers (JLs), we explore the properties of group Va antimony-based JLs SbXY (X = Se/Te and Y = I/Br). Using Bader charges, the electric dipole moment in the out-of-plane direction of all the JLs is studied and the largest dipole moment is found to be in the SbSeI JL. Our results on the formation energy, phonon spectra, elastic constants, and molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulation provide insights into the energetic, vibrational, mechanical, and thermal stability of JLs.

We present a comprehensive theoretical analysis of the structural and electronic properties of a van der Waals heterostructure composed of CdS and α-Te single layers (SLs). The investigation includes an in-depth study of fundamental structural, electronic, and optical properties with a focus on their implications for photocatalytic applications. The findings reveal that the α-Te SL significantly influences the electronic properties of the heterostructure.

Background: Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a FDA approved therapy regularly used to treat a variety of neurological disorders that impact the central nervous system (CNS) including epilepsy and stroke. Putatively, the therapeutic efficacy of VNS results from its action on neuromodulatory centers via projections of the vagus nerve to the solitary tract nucleus. Remedial investigations of sites contaminated with legacy pollutants like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have traditionally focused on mapping sediment contamination to develop a site conceptual model and select remedy options. Ignoring dissolved concentrations that drive transport and bioaccumulation often leads to an incomplete assessment of ongoing inputs to the water column and overestimation of potential effectiveness of sediment remediation. Here, we demonstrate the utility of codeployment of passive equilibrium samplers and freshwater mussels as dual lines of evidence to identify ongoing sources of PCBs from eight main tributaries of the Anacostia River in Washington, DC, that has been historically polluted from industrial and other human activities.

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is inherited as an autosomal dominant disorder presenting as hamartomatous polyps in the small bowel, mucocutaneous pigmentation and with a predisposition to develop cancer. The temperature dependence of the stability of bulk BaZrO (BZO) and of the vacancies in this material are investigated by considering phonon contributions to the free energy. The stability diagram of BZO is determined for different chemical environments. With increasing temperature the stability region becomes smaller which is particularly caused by the strong temperature dependence of the chemical potential of gaseous oxygen.
